Rest in peace Wouter. Very sad and tragic news. 26 years is old is such a young age to be taken from us.

My deepest sympathies and condolences to all of his family and friends and all of his colleagues at Leopard Trek and throughout the peloton.

The sport matters little at times like these.

Seriously? Jesus.

26 years old, good looking kid, seriously talented athlete, child on the way, his whole life ahead of him, and it all comes to and end with a clip of the pedal at the wrong spot at the wrong time.

What a tragedy.

yes, he would have become father in Sep.

RIP

So sad:(:(

RIP

I'm glad I turned on my feed seconds after the camera pulled away. It sounds like the images were horrific and that's not how I'll remember Wouter.

I just hope his family didn't see that.
It's bad enough as it is without the horrific images.

Just hope his wife wasn't watching.

Personally, I don't mind that RAI showed the footage, but they should think a little bit more of the family that was watching it. They didn't want to see that.

Very glad now that I didn't see the crash live. I understand that it's a dangerous sport and accidents happen, sometimes with tragic outcomes, but I saw Casartelli's crash and I don't ever want to see something like that again.

I can understand, it's not like they had much time to think about it. I got the feeling they cut away from that camera as soon as they realized the severity of his injuries.

This reminds us that life can be fragile and bike racing is a dangerous sport.

My deepest sympathies go to his family and teammates.

Not sure if I'll be able to ride my bike this week...

26 and with a child on the way...So young, with so much life ahead of you.

May the family find the strength to carry on. It's a bitter tragedy but there will come a time when joy can enter your hearts once again, if you let it. His memory will live with us.

Can't really blaime Rai at all. It looked like a 'every day crash' So sad that they got so 'great' footage of the situation. feel like I just saw a man die live on tv. Makes me a bit sick.

Actually, Weylandt was scheduled to race all along. Feillu was Bennati's replacement.

It still sucks exactly as much.

You are right. I am an idiot and my memory just failed in the badest possible moment.
Sorry.
I am just shocked and still can't believe it.

The fact that I was discussing Casartellis accident with TFF today, and see this happen now again, makes me even sader.

Dont think the image of him lying there is one I will ever get out of my head.

A tragic day for his family, his team, and the whole of cycling. Nothing else to add.

There is nothing to describe how horrible this is. You don't watch any sport expecting this to happen.

Oh his poor family. :(

They show footage of injured cyclists all the time and 999/1000 times the cyclist stands up again almost immediately and gets back on his bike. I guess the director needed a moment to get over the shock of realising what he was showing there too until he cut away.

Wow, what can a person say when such a tragidy strikes? Life is fleeting and fragile, make the most of every moment because it can end in one instant. Deepest condolences to his loved ones and teammates.

True. This Giro was going to be epic. Now I won't be able to stop thinking about the Weylandt family.

This is one of the rare times when I'm happy I wasn't able to watch a stage.

I have made a sober avatar that I'm going to use for the next month. Anyone who wants to use it too (or another one for that matter), is of course free to do so.

I'll put it up here.

And to think that yesterday we were having fits over sprinting etiquette. Internet RIP's and condolences are meaningless, but I can't help but feel that it's still important to show respect to a life that has passed on in tragic circumstances. I only hope his family and friends can find peace after the grieving.
