Sorry, i don't know a thing about English literature:cool:
(but i am reading Anthony Giddens right now, that's for my Contemporary Sociological Theories course, but that's rather a sociologist/politician than a writer i presume)

Corporate counsel (mergers & acquisition).

Hey Publicus - snap! I'm an M&A lawyer by day (and more than a few nights), property developer on the side, father and former full-time bike-racer when I was a young fella :)...

For you M&A lawyers in the US: That is my old field! I was Deputy Director, Office of Public Affairs at the Federal Trade Commisison when I got married and moved to GErmany.

I handled everything but actually specialized in antitrust laws. Oh, those mergers, and going to court to stop them and requiring that assets be divested.....

Gosh, that's real trip down memory lane!

Semi retired but don't want to stop working

I'm 62 but can't see myself retiring. I have a building company with 25 employees including office manager and supervisors. We do Government Housing maintenance and upgrades and the company virtually runs itself so I only put in around 15 hours per week. The rest of the time I look for commercial and residential properties to buy and have 16 at he moment. The property market in OZ is still a good investment if you choose well.

The rest of the time I like to work on my acreage property which keeps me reasonably fit. I do Hung gar kung fu and do weight training with a personal trainer once a week. I try and get out for a ride on on the bike with a couple of friends, once maybe twice a week, but only for an hour or so. I have atrial fibrillation so much more than than this it kicks in and I get tired from hard effort.

My personal enjoyment is with family and trying to contribute to my local community: rotary and street kid programs. My wife and I also sponsor 4 kids in Uganda who we met this year.

I enjoy reading the forum, although I don't contribute much: you guys are SO informed I don't have much to offer. I was a level 2 coach for a while but that faded away when I stopped masters racing myself, about 12 years ago.

My ambitions are to go and watch all the Belgian classics, drink beer and eat frites and take in the action at the side of the road. My wife loves travel so I guess I'll have to go and look at pyramids and temples as well.

Getting older isn't too bad!

I've been a high school English teacher for the past twenty years. For the previous ten or so I was a labor union organizer and business agent where I represented mostly truck drivers and warehousemen by negotiating collective bargaining agreements, handling work disputes, and trying to unionize the non-union workers. When I started teaching high school, I was amazed by how such seemingly different professions required such similar skills: I found that people, regardless of age, class, or educational attainment, just want to be listened to by someone who cares.

Hi, my first post on the forum!

My current occupation is a rowing coach, coaching competitive Junior (U-19) women. Their season is essentially 50 weeks a year, not including a short Christmas break, it's pretty full on.

I have also just finished 7 years of studies in Greek Archaeology, with a few more to go. I hope to pursue this is my primary occupation, focussing on 4th century BC Macedonian and Hellenistic art and architecture, as well as the Bronze Age Aegean, ie: the Minoans and Mycenaeans.

Ideally I can juggle the two, I can't imagine living without both.

Worked out of school for a bank for 12 years ... and very similarly to DIMSPACE found that the pressures on me and my desire to prove myself caused a stress induced break for 6 months.

A complete career change into Viticulture and ending up assistant manager of a 1000 acre vineyard put things into perspective.

I am now back in the finance industry - mainly due to better hours, but this time on my terms. LIFE's much better when you realise the gift of a child and my two year old daughter has taught me that.

Sometimes a change of scenery is all that it takes.
