    Giro descending competition

    Descending is a skill that some cyclists develop. Timed sections seems like the obvious way to measure that ability. Participation in this competition is not compulsory. Danger is increased by the way that most cyclists follow the rider in front of them rather than weighing up the conditions...

    Serious Crash involving several Giant-Alpecin riders

    Re: It is an accident if there are unforeseeable consequences for a given action. I cannot see how driving on the wrong side of the road would not lead to the conclusion that there would be a collision with oncoming traffic.

    Disc brakes on road bikes...

    Re: Re: Assuming that you have inspected your rims and noticed some wear, at what point do you decide that the rim is no longer safe to use? Rim manufacturers do not specify when rims are worn out, whereas there will normally be a minimum thickness for discs specified and marked onto discs.

    Disc brakes on road bikes...

    All of the comments about interchangeability in the professional peloton seem reasonable, and may well cause problems during a race. I have sympathy for the tiny minority of cyclists this may effect. The majority do not race or compete where there is no service provided. What seems to be ignored...

    Rock & Roll will never die, but rim brakes are on the outs.

    Agreed, unfortunately as with all rim brakes you will find a significant change in their performance as soon as it rains. This is the answer to the question that a number of people are asking.

    ::::~ Wheelbuilders thread ~::::

    100 kgf was what I was aiming for, The guide that comes with the tension meter has readings for different types of spokes. When I measured the CXrays they did not exactly match any of the listed sizes, close but not exact. My question is what should the meter reading be? I am 70kg, and spend my...

    Quickstep sponsored by spam

    I have reconditioned a number of these hubs. The problem is that the plastic bush runs on an anodised aluminium surface. When the anodising wears out the aluminium underneath then wears rapidly and contaminates the oil in a self perpetuating cycle. Generally the bush shows little wear. A steel...

    Sorry I dont have any photos at hand but can take some and post them later if you are interested. The wheels are for my granny's bike that is coming up to 100yrs since manufacture. The rear hub is an eadi coaster, front hub low flange rims are 28" rolled without flat side walls for braking...

    ::::~ Wheelbuilders thread ~::::

    I am wanting to rebuild a set of antique 28" wheels. Using spokecalc and measuring the spokes from the current wheels the lengths required are between 308 and 312mm. I have had the LBS check local suppliers without success. Does anyone know where I can buy some stainless spokes at these lengths?

    Trying to reason in the Magpie season

    Cant find a link to youtube but a group of people had some fun running tests on what keeps magpies at bay. They tried all of the suggestion mentioned above and none of them worked.

    How long should a chain last?

    Replace the chain as often as you feel you must. It is true that worn chains will wear sprockets. Also worn sprockets will shorten the life of a new chain. My advice is to run 2 chains on each set of sprockets and then replace the entire drive train. As an experiment I ran an eight speed...
