Can't remember anything about clinic issues. However, he was assaulted by a driver a few years back.

I really enjoyed watching him at the front of the race. I've always loved those riders that just tortured themselves in doomed breakaways day after day.

One of the few British riders that you didn't really feel uneasy supporting during the period of dominance.
'Cold weather specialist' is my also favourite sub-demographic of cyclist, just pipping 'Top climber who wouldn't know a TT bike if it fell on them from a great height'.
I still maintain he would've won MSR, but legend has it him and Sylvain Chavanel are still attacking each other up the Poggio to this day. He was also an integral part of 2 of my favourite races ever, Het Volk 2015 and Roubaix 2016, coming from nowhere out of the camera shot right at the end I thought he had it.

I didn't like him at all, because I'm a big Boonen and Van Avermaet fan. And we all know what happened those two years at the Omloop.
Years later I'm honest enough to say those were two fine victories, certainly the second, since everyone still remembers them.
Shame you have to quit sports this way.

I didn't like him and how he couldn't bring himself to congratulate Hayman in Roubaix after having given him the broadside on the Carrefour de l'Arbre which almost cost Hayman his presence in the front group. I'm very glad he never went better in a monument than that time.

A proper hard man on the bike, but seemed like a decent guy off it. A shame his career has gone downhill the past couple of years but I guess now we know some of the reasons for that.
As mentioned above, his 3 to 1 win against quickstep will go down as a superb piece of sport.

Stannard did eventually congratulate Hayman later, I remember watching him come across during one of the press conferences.
I do agree that it was a blatant move when he flicked Hayman off the cobbles on the Carrefour though, there was no need for that, I was fuming when it happened.
What an odd thing to say. I'll decide which British riders I feel uneasy about supporting.

Not mentioned in this thread yet but Ramunas Navadauskas is retiring. Sited a difficult last few years due to a couple of reasons including payment issues from Nippo Delko and also his cardiac issues in 2017. Main thing I remember about him is the Lithuanian jersey in Garmin and his Tour stage win after attacking on the wet descent that woule otherwise have been a sprinters day.

Would? I did! To be fair I can't recall the podiums (other than winners) from most of the worlds that I've watched since 2011/10. The ones that stick out are 2013, 2016 2019 and then also this year.
He was arguably the best “big engine super-workhorse domestique“ who can also win races in the peloton for a couple of years. A real shame.

Michael Carbel says farvel at an age of 25. He didn't get an extension of his contract with NTT/Assos Qhubeka and doesn't want to continue chasing the dream.
He was a promising talent and was third in the U23 World Championships road race in Bergen but he never broke through in the pro ranks.

Enrico Gasparotto calls it a day. One of the purest Ardennes specialists, but he was also good in the Italian Autumn classics. Not bringing him to the 2014 WC was probably Cassani's biggest mistake.
