Even MVP and Pog are not going to continue to pull at a hard steady pace if 3 guys (who are obviously strong today) are going to sit on.
Yes they will. They aren’t normal favourites, they are freaks. they have a minute and will be confident that they can ditch the three anyway. What are they going to do, let the group come back?

And that's exactly what all 5 are doing.
For 3 of them (Madouas, Turner, Van Baarle) the closest chance to win is cooperate and hope for the best on the climbs. If they don't, it could come back all together or the chasers will catch them after they get dropped.
For 2 of them (Pog and MvdP) it's driving the pace but trying to conserve more than the other favourite.

“Wheelsucking“ is good actually. The slipstream effect is the central tactical feature of the sport. There are plenty of racing sports which have very limited tactical elements and people who object to wheelsucking should watch them instead,
