My prediction for this Giro's top 10 (never been this excited for the Giro before, probably because i am a fan of Sastre combined with the great route):

GC:

1. Carlos Sastre
2. Cadel Evans (sorry, another 2nd for you)
3. Alexandre Vinokourov
4. Vincenzo Nibali
5. Stefano Garzelli
6. Ivan Basso
7. Domenico Pozzovivo
8. Marzio Bruzeghin
9. Michele Scarponi
10. Damiano Cunego

Anyone else notice the participants by nation...14 aussies, 3rd behind the italians and the french, despite there being no aussie team. If only Australians were interested and had a sponsor...pick your 9 from these guys and its a very solid team.
Team Fly V is trying to get pro tour status.......big thing is the budget as they wouldnt be able to afford any of them at this stage!

There is a few Aussies not Riding here (Rogers & OGrady for starters) so despite not having a team, little sponsor pulling power, about 1/3 of the population of most 'cycling powerhouses' and being at the other side of the world we do very well!

I just wish this god forsaken county would give them some respect - it p****es me off somthing chronic!

You don't have to be a TT specialist to do well in a TTT.

Yeah, you need people who are great at short extreme efforts. In other words, you need people who are good in prologues. Notice how they don't have any.

They've trained specifically on the TTT, and they've recced the course, so I think you could be right. You don't have to be a TT specialist to do well in a TTT.

They have some guys in that team who can do good at tt's and some others who can do good prologues.

I also think BMC can do reasonable TTT,hopefully only losing 1min30seconds to 2mins...would be my estimate.Which isnt too much time for Cadel.

I think 40 secs to teams like liquigas or cervelo.

Even 40 seconds leaves little margin for error if Sastre or (even) Basso finds their climbing legs. I can see Cadel hanging with them on some of these climbs, but my money would be on Sastre—not Cadel—pulling away and putting some distance between himself and the rest of the contenders once things start to go uphill.

On paper, and for the sake of argument ignoring the TTT, when is Sastre's first chance to take time back on Vino and Evans? Will he take it in the first week if he has the chance? The reason why I ask is I dont think he takes every chance. I think he waits for the combination of tiredness in opponents and feeling good. Agree?

Historically Sastre is a final week man.

We will know he's the favourite for victory if he holds Evans on Zoncolan and Kronplatz. If he can stay within 1-2mins then expect an assault on the last two days of mountains - which are absolutely brutal.
