That's terrible news about Steegmans. I hope he's not seriously injured. :(

Been to the hospital for checks. Apparently everything's fine. Somehow his helmet flew off his head and he hit his head against the pavement.

Is Filipe Cardose related to Manuel Cardoso?

No, don't think so

So are you suggesting that the peloton will stay together the entire stage, shredding riders until it is down to the strong men? Somehow I don't see that working out quite that way. There will be a break and some team (or teams) with a GC contender(s) will chase down the break (maybe not completely, but the gap will be narrowed) before the final climb. I'm suggesting that after yesterday's effort (MV's "donkey work"), Astana shift that responsibility to another team. But maybe I'm wrong (wouldn't be the first time) and Astana has the legs to pull it off two days in a row this early in the season.

No, that would be foolish. I'm suggesting the stage is too hard for the break to have any chance. It will be decided by attacks on the final climb

Thanks for the update and the clarification.

A previous information was aware of the withdrawal of Manuel Cardoso (Footon-Servetto). The national champion has been brought to the ambulance. A setback as it is suspected fracture of the clavicle.

The crash looked at first sight earnestly. Steegmans was immediately examined in an ambulance, but it appeared that a hospitalization was not necessary. De renner heeft wel veel pijn aan de heup en de dij en was ook duizelig. Hij is uit de koers gestapt. The rider has a lot of pain to the hip and thigh and was dizzy. He has gotten off course.

Apparently Martinelli didn't agree with my tactical plan. Astana has been controlling the break all day. It's now at 2:25 with about 60KM to go.

Hmm strange tactic imo, anyway is there some live tv coverage from it? I'd love to see the final climb :p.

No live tv coverage (Just text message), but the gap is down to 50 seconds with 50+km to go.

Contador Notebook has twitter feed that is in English.

Down to 20 seconds and one of the 6 remaining break riders has dropped back, while another has shot off the front.

Google translate doesn't do a good job with it, but I think they are saying Astana is setting a brutal pace and has reduced the peloton to about 40 riders. I'll update when I have better info/translation.

I think I got it right--small peloton. 20KM to the finish.

All together with about 35KM remaining. Astana in control of the peloton.

I assume they are starting the descent. The final climb looks like it is about 13km from the finish.

Given AC less then stellar attack on Stage 1 it will be interesting to see how he performs on a longer, steeper climb.

Ouch, Portuguese. Not my best language.

The group is together with Astana at the front.

Not mine at all. Google translate does a decent job and Contador Notebook retweets the updates in English. But she (they) are on some sort of break.

Astana still leading small group. 6 KM remaining

Would be nice if the told us who was in the small group. At least the overall contenders would be nice.

I think that Peloton Compacto is like Groupo Compacto in Italian. It means they are all together. It appears they are all still together with 6km to go. This is where the action starts

Thanks. They should be on the final climb in a minute or so.

@procyclinglive is also doing twitter feeds in English.

At Sporza.be Phil Maertens said that Steegmans said no to the hospital after being checked out in the ambulance, but was still suffering from dizziness. They might still have him checked for concussion - I've read both that his helmet cracked, and that he hit his head after it flew off. Hope he's OK. I'm still fighting symptoms after someone crashed into my car and I blacked out a bit.

Quickstep rider (unknown) attacks, covered by two Astana riders (not identified). 2 KM to go.

It's AC and De la Fuentes. They are leading the race with Tiago Machado (Radio Shack) giving chase.
