He's an actual rider, and he's Portuguese, look him up :)

Yes, but I don't get it. "Cera" just means "Wax" over here.

Call me dumb, or call me sleepy (it is late after all), but I don't get it. I'm an idiot, I guess

This is by a very long margin the worst course I've ever seen for this race.

Where are the two usual mountain finishes?
First the Tour de Suisse, now this. What cool race are they going to neuter next?

bah

I race bikes and triathlon, I feel the same way when they allowed drafting in the bike leg. With drafting in a bikeleg, all you need to do is swim fast enough, hang onto strong cyclists and then out run them. Makes the whole thing a running race. Sure the time gaps at the end are smaller but that doesn't necessarily make for a good race. Same with dumping mountain top finishes, makes the leader board close at the end, but not necessarily good racing.

this was some wierd prologue

wow. just watched a recap.

I can’t recall so much diversity in equipment selection in an itt - from a regular stage bike w/o clipons (not even a rear aero wheels) to the latest and slickest aero technology.

even within the same team, equipment choices varied widely. For ex, kloeden essentially rode a road bike whilst levi rode a full aero machine.

average speed of the winner was quite slow - 3.6 km @ 43.6 km/h. a ‘normal’ prologue this length should elicit 53-55 km/h.

a guess, a fit and daring rider with good enough bike did well yesterday.

kloeden must be in a hell of a shape to do this good on a road bike.

Over here Rabobank means "B-U-T-T Bank", so I wouldn't laugh if I were you, Dutch individual person type guy :D

Haha, that is pretty funny. I always thought it was tail-bank, which doesn't bode well for their overall competitiveness or combined team ranking either. But(t) anyways I can see how tail/rear-end is intimately related to your translation... :D

Is the Italian 'Saddle' riding? ;)

Suprised me as well, although I don't think riding a fully equiped TT bike would be very advantageous considering the conditions.

On a different note, I don't think Cavendish handled that 180 degree bend very well. Makes it even more impressive. Sastre was downright horrible not that he would care.

IceFire's vid

IceFire, Thanks for the video. You know, I don't recall Contador from those days at all, but the whole package was there already: He looks identical to the AC of today: Great footage of AC's first stage race overall victory.

With today's pancake-flat finishing circuits and the relative lack of sprinting talent in the field, I think we have to expect Cav to finally get that first win of 2010.

see pereiro comment below.

few other interesting observations.

(i) as i noticed earlier, pereiro’s 5:07 shows he’s getting where martinelli wants him to be
(ii) post-stage, pereiro complemented levi saying he placed so well despite taking no risk on a downhill
(iii) rabo’s best man ardilla (5:05, 16th)) rode last kilometer 4 seconds slower than his teammate menchov (5:22, 120th). van houwelingen explained - menchov took zero risk but on a last straight km he rode at full gas.
(iv) ll sanchez’s 5:03 is further proof hes the man to beat here.
