Friere was coming back at Gavazzi fast, he got bullied out of position on that twisting run in it seems.

[edit] Valverde an extremely disappointing 20th.

That's two of us with Valverde avatars who agree, then :p

(although mine is purely ironic)

Well, you changed it back I see. Hoping to give him some new negative karma I imagine :p

If he got blocked again, I'm going to laugh.

Then cry.

Valverde was 20th and there are no time bonuses. Does Freire get the jersey on average stage placings?

Freire definitely didn't get blocked, but Gavazzi looked like he might've cut the Columbia guy (Velits) off a little, who ended up 3rd.

seems like there was a gap of 2 seconds somewhere, so Freire should get the leader jersey anyway

Between 11th and 12th apparently

EDIT: HA HA it was Pinotti who let the gap open. After his twitter comment yesterday, that's awesome :D

I watched the last k again. It seemed as if Freire was too far in the back, and with the turns, he lost someone's wheel or a small gap appeared. He then had to make up the difference, but the sprint was over before he knew it.

bad timing? bad reconning of the last k? bad luck who knows

Really? 2 seconds? I wasn't looking but if there was a 2 second gap I think I would've noticed it... Don't know why the direction seems so bent on establishing these slight breaks in the peleton.

It's Pinotti's way of being a vigilate :)

Cyclingnews needs to get a supply of these awful Footon caps to giveaway for guessing the podiums. These are collector's items!

More lucky for Valverde.
Means his lot get the day off and Rabo have to work on the Queen stage.
Bet Bobby G is chuffed.........not.

I think in a post-race intv with Juanma Garate he said that Valverde wanted to lose the jersey without losing time.

He sure lived up to his expectations then!

Oh well, as long as they keep 3 men for Gesink, you might even sacrifice Freire, he doesn't have trouble working for teammates, Freire did that in the past as well.
But a bit of a waste of energy it will be.

From what I've seen from Valverde this far it will be hard to beat him, seems to be in puertotastic form

That 2 seconds is the time between the front rider in the first group and the front rider in the second group, not the size of the gap itself. The rules on how big the gap has to be to be a gap are kind of vague.

Oddly enough, the Saxo propaganda machine states otherwise:
Francesco Gavazzi Took Stage Three - Oscar Freire In Overall Lead

[07.04 17:59] The 187 kilometer long third stage of Vuelta Pais Vasco was dominated by five riders who formed today's breakaway on the fairly hilly course between Viana and Amurrio.
Stage three was decided in a bunch sprint and for the third time Oscar Freire (Rabobank) was one step away from taking the win.

Today, the three time world champion was denied by Francesco Gavazzi (Lampre). However, the fast Spaniard took over the leader's jersey from compatriot, Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne).

Team Saxo Bank's Fränk and Andy Schleck were both well-positioned in the front part of the peloton throughout the stage. Tomorrow's stage over 160 kilometers ends with an uphill finish on the climb of Alto del Uzartza and Oscar Freire (Rabobank) will have a hard time keeping the overall of the race.

Well, in all fairness, the crazy Basque's are making a mess of the results each day so far, even listing riders who aren't riding.

Perhaps they have mistaken him for another Saxo Bank rider.
I would not be suprised if tomorrow, Fränk suddenly is in the same time
