Awesome race, nail biting to the end. Gerrans a deserving winner. I would love to know what happpened at the top of the climb between CJ and Porte. Last camera shot CJ was almost there. If Porte had been able to drag CJ along with him...

Matt White (GE DS) said (on TV) that Porte appeared to hesitate too long before realising that CJ "would not make it" and missed his chance of winning due to the effort required to haul in the leaders.

Good race.

I was actually kinda hoping that someone other than Greenedge would win .... but happy enough that if it had to be one of them, that its Gerrains.

He will at least wear it fairly well.

Thanks. Porte put in a gutsy chase but he did the last lap on his own. There was no way he was going win against the other two who were able to share the workload.

Great win by Gerrans and an entertaining race.

I'm not usually shocked these days at some of the comments that Phil Liggett makes, but there was one that had me baffled to say the least. As Matthew Lloyd surged up the climb on the second last lap he said something like, "This man is a magical climber. He can kick like Alberto Contador."

It was a bit strange when GE was leading the chasing bunch behind Haussler with Durbridge marking and Meyer upfront.

Lucky they ended up with the win and not the others who were in that 3rd group. Perhaps they were on the front trying to slow it or keeping in touch in case Meyer and Durbridge cracked.

Mars national cycling championships

I'm wondering what the Martian national jersey looks like. It appears they only gave Gerrans an Australian one.

awesome day up on the "mountain". good crowd feel up at the kom which grew as the race went on. early on we wandered down into town for additional refreshments and there was a veritable tide going the other way.
the attacks from gerrans and then lloyd on the climb were a joy to behold and having the big screen up there made for a great day.

They were leading but weren't chasing. Hayman took control after that (not sure who else helped him, but he must have done the bulk of the work).

Thanks. I guess not enough camera teams but the coverage was good.

I was hoping Lloyd could have gone earlier in the climb but I doubt he could have satyed away from Gerrans.

It was a very entertaining race.

I understand that CJ Sutton was pretty close to bridging to Porte? Could be a dark horse for the TDU then. Although I guess Gerrans is now the favourite for that race.

Sutton was with Porte going up the final climb, but then he wasn't there when they went over the top. Didn't see exactly what happened on television, as things were focused right at the front.

By the way did Cam Meyer bonk? I didn't see him eat once.

Yep, the dreaded fringale! Would have gone close if he ate properly. Should have known better.

Best National in ages. Close tactical racing with plenty of action. Great atmosphere on course too.

On a seperate note, a very disappointing result for Alby today. Was spat out the back very early on. Had form from the Jayco crits and both Giacoppo and Von Hoff were in the lead group coming off podium results on the Friday. His 2nd at the equally tough Geelong WC course showed the parcours should not have been a problem.

Also Goss nowhere near his early 2011 form which is a good thing.

so - closed race better?

I think so

Also better with almost all the European pros contesting. GreenEdge wanted to win it badly and it seems like everyone wanted to beat GreenEdge so they showed up.

Just need Cuddles next year.

I really dont see Cuddles showing up any time soon - and if he does he wont be in any kind of form

Sadly. Would be great

Is Daniel McConnell likely to move over to road racing or would he be riding the Nationals as mountain bike training? I haven't seen him ride before and he looked good in that strong bunch. The other little known rider to do well was Mark O'Brien for Budget Forklifts, he was doing a fair bit of work today.
