Not saying he's second rate, more the fact that a non-favourite went up the road, all the favourites looked at one another and refused to work with Canc and Vansummeren walked away with the spoils.
Hypothetically, if they race hard up Valcava to put try and put Phil in difficulty, whose going to want to work with him to bring him back to the front group, particularly if the likes of Nibbles, some carrots and a few other big names are there?

Why on earth isn't Froome doing this? He'd make Gilbert look like a club cyclist :D

like in GP Montreal. Gilbert and the other favourites watch n close down eachother. A 2nd rate rider is able to jump away.

For myself, I think it'll be between the pre-race favourites.

Don't forget that Phil didn't have a strong team at the Canadian races.

Now he will be able to count on Jurgen van den Broeck(who should be able to make it to the final) and Jelle Vanendert(who has been sick recently though, so he'll probably have to work before the final). Perhaps Bart de Clercq can show his Giro form again.

Will be interesting to see how desperate they all are to work for their ex teammate.

Not every team is as disgusting as Sky or Greenedge in stuff like this. Mark Renshaw not getting an invite to the WC was purely because he didn't sign with Greenedge.

And seeing some of these threats already from the selectors of the national team at the Olympics if Cav doesn't sign for Sky is also really pathetic.

edit: forgot Garmin. Also disgusting that Thor Hushovd didn't get to ride the Vuelta.

I think those are all rather different issues than the one I'm highlighting as a point of interest.

There's no question of an abuse of position by a team here, but it will be interesting how much those riders as individuals really care, when the glory goes to an individual leaving the team immediately after that race.

They know for quite some time already that Phil is leaving and they've worked for him well in pretty much every race. If it was Sky, Garmin or Greenedge Phil wouldn't even be on the startlist of Lombardia ;)

As for Vanendert, he already said he was going to work for Gilbert at Lombardia in an interview during the Franco-Belge. That should answer your question.

Phil told them all pretty plainly when Omega-Pharma and Lotto announced the split that he would be leaving .....

and yet the team has ridden amazingly well for him all season. He certainly would not have won nearly the amount he has if not for his team, so I seriously dont think there is an issue.
