such a wonderful lovely race, and yet im struggling to get up any enthusiasm.

Breakaway, break caught, elite group of riders hit the front, 5k to go Gilbert attacks, makes elite group of riders look like a bunch of sunday club runners, wins with ease.

Yawn

People were predicting Cancellara to dominate the cobled classics this year and win easily. He didn't win any of the major classics (unless you classify E3 as a classic). It is still a beautiful race even if it a bit predictable.

Is that because of Gilbert's form this season or based on past editions?

Lat year he attacked 40km out and there was a frantic chase by Scarponi who actually made it up to him only to crack in the final 3km.

Lombardia is a different race to the ones he's won since the Tour. None are as prestigious so perhaps they aren't as bitterly fought over.

This year's Lombardia is a new course that no one currently riding will have ridden before, so offers the possibility of an upset. But until we know the climbs and their position we can't even predict an outcome.

Looks a bit like Valcava will make a return. I read that on Italian forums. I'm getting excited about tomorrow, but I fear, that I have to lower my expectations. Could be that there a few flat km to the finish in Lecco.

if that climb is in the race gilbert surely won't win if the front guys are organized.

i am hoping for il principe to consolidate his status as "mr. GdL".

the only problem i see with that climb is that if they use it rui costa won't be anywhere near the front like i hoped he would be :p

If the finish line is really that far from the climb than no way that Gilbert will get dropped.

well if lets say: nibali, cunego, scarponi, purito and a few others attack that climb, they can drop gilbert(i think we all agree all those guys can drop gilbert easily on a 12k long climb that hard) and form a strong enough group to stay away till the finish. behind the teams of the guys in front won't help gilbert and the guys that were left behind will want him to do all the work. at that time vanendert and VdB2 may be the only domestiques gilbert has left so. . .

Have you looked at the profile? Whether he gets back on afterwards is another matter, but there should be a few guys who can put time into him on a climb of that difficulty.

don't know what to say.if the rumours are true expect basso to storm valcava in full-gas mode.i don't think phil will be there.
but let's wait for the official route.

As you can see in the 1986 edition's profile, it is not far from Lecco.

I'm quite sure, that this will be in the race, otherwise Basso wouldn't have announced, that he is looking for the win.

You get the reward of naming the longest list of overrated climbers in one sentence. "Oh look at us we get dropped on climbs by Maxim Monfort." LOL

btw 2 of those overrated climbers put 2 minutes into gilbert last year in xorret de cati which is only 6k long.

You jest but there very good climbers and as good as Gilbert is he isn't superman. Parrulo has gave a very resonable scenario.

Vino has already decided that he will be winning the Lombardia so really our discussions are futile.

well looking how fit he is and that he said he's coming in lombardia for more points,i won't be shocked to see him riding at the front.i was shocked when he said he's back on the bike just two months after a damn femur break.he's the supreme beast.

2009 lombardia: :)

4km long.

And last year's race had the Ghisallo + short descent + Colma di Sormano, then 32km flat to Como with the short San Fermo climb first. That is not much easier than this.
