Question is:

Can Andy hold 1:14 + whatever he gets tomorrow, over Conti in the final ITT?

The good news is that Contador might be attacking a lot in the mountains!
It'll be a good show, whatever happens.

Also remember the guys that were involved in the first crash were held up by the second crash. The gap stabilized at 30-40 seconds before the last 2km and in that second crash we saw cars stopping, riders falling all over the road and suddenly group 2 and 3 melted together at the finish line at more than a minute.

It would be very unfair if the first crash group lost more time because of the second crash whereas that same 2nd crash group won't have any damage.

Very good point, but since when has fair play been something paramount and unimpeachable in cycling, except in the fantasies of Andy Schleck's fans on stage 15 last year?

The problem though is that it wasn't completely due to no fault of their own. It was the first stage of the Tour de France with less then 10km to go, at this point any serious contender should be in the front 5th of the peleton. Both Contador and Sanchez got caught out because they were to far behind.

That being said my heart did sink when I saw Euskaltel riding, Samu is one of my favorite riders in the peleton and it sucks he lost time. But that is cycling.

I agree and disagree. Here the crash was caused by a spectator. But crashes happen. It should make for some interesting racing going forward.

Arnout makes a good point, but I doubt ASO will go with it. AC is simply screwed.

There goes contadors chances. I think its really gone this time. He looked as if he gave up. schleck wont give back that 1min easily.

AC is at least that in the itt.

It still depends how he recovers from giro.

There will be no hiding anymore.

And alas this is just the first of many difficult and nervous stages within the first week.

This will make riders that much more nervous.

I see the results are official. Its a total joke because of this reason. Well I might be logging of Tour again

I think that the time Andy will have after tomorrow will give him enough of a buffer for the final Time Trial. This means Alberto will have to take time in the mountains, which will make for a spectacle. That being said he did seem to sort of give up which would be a shame. Even though I'm a Schlecklet fan I want to see him win on merit not because Contador gives up after stage one.

But how are they going to do that? They can't know who was in the first group and who wasn't. And they can't give the few ones that missed out for sure a different time. So it will be interesting to see what they end with. Maybe put everyone at 19 seconds?

Many people in the front group lost more than 6". As far as I know, who gets what time in a situation like this is completely up to the commissaires' whims, right?

I also find it a pretty messy situation. It's going to be hard/impossible to make a fair judgement. It's always gonna suck.

6 seconds for everyone caught up in the second crash seems pretty arbitrary to me.

Apparently they gave everyone that was in the first group after the crash +0.06 seconds. So also the people that didnt end up in the 2nd crash, but got dropped from the first group.

I have a strong feeling the'll neutralizing all time gaps.

Doubt they will for one very simple reason. The ****storm the french public would make if they gave Contador back his 1 minute 15. In my mind if they had any grounds to keep Contador out they would have.

No one was getting their panties in a twist about Gesink other than you. It was pretty sure he didn't lose time.

So guys who now finished around +14 sec, +22 and such are given the same time as everyone else. They weren't even involved in a crash and get more time.

I also find it incredibly hard to believe that there 78 riders NOT held up in the first crash. The group looked a lot smaller than that
