So if Andy was lost behind - why did Cancellara pointlessly (against Gilbert) attack and drag the front group slightly further ahead?

Sorry Hitch but if Samu fell in the 2KM crash you would be happy to scream for the 3km rule..

No i wouldnt.

If you look at my posting history you will find that i have always been an opponent of any situations where riders lose time through no fault of their own.

Thats why it ****es me off so much more when it happens to a rider I like.

Fabian Cancellara did last year.

There's a difference between that crash and this one. While you have a point that crash was due to adverse weather and rather then a few people crashing and half the peleton stuck behind them half the peleton crashed. Als that crash was 30km before the finish this one was about 6km. I'm not saying last year was right, but it was different.

Don't take it out on Gesink though, it wasn't his fault the spectator did what he did. He did what he had to do and was in front, with a bit of luck too of course.

Gesink was actually pretty much next to the Astana guy that hit the spectator.

So close :)

guys -sorry but the crash around 2 km to go won't count for the 3km inside crash rule, since the terrain is sloping. this happens to Stefan Schumacher in 2008 when he was wearing yellow and crash in less than 500 meters to the finish-which was uphill.

Give me the location and date of your next ride and ill throw a spectator into you and then well see what your opinions about not crashing are.

It's not the crashing, everyone could have predicted some crashes today.

It's the fact that some key riders are not up front but keep their place in the middle or the back of the pack. Positioning.

But yeah, that was *** :-/

I honestly thought Cancellara's attack was pretty pointless, he made it easier for Gilbert in the end. Either attack full out or don't attack, he seemed to hold back constantly.

Nice by evans, but if Gilbert didn't have to go so early, the difference would have been larger i think. Anyway, we all knew Evans can do these types of finishes, it isn't really a surprise, though i didn't expect him in the top 5. I am pleasantly surprised though by JVDB's 5th place. Never thought he could do this.

As for the 3K rule. Isn't the rule that the time is given of the main group (the largest group)? I would think that is not the guys at 6 seconds though. Correct me if i'm wrong, because i'm actually just thinking out loud and don't know the exact rules.

cheers valentius

at what point will we know for sure about the 3km rule?

Looks like it should be in place but CN are reporting as though it isnt (despite Susan's comments) - although I guess the current report is the real rush job

Cn are not known for getting things correct. Lots of sources are saying its in place.

It is in place.

posters have quoted the ASO saying stage 4 will be the first regular stage without the 3k rule

The question was, would you give a free pass to GC contenders caught behind due to crashes?

The answer is, if you're Fabian Cancellara, yes.

I agree that the situations are different in their minutiae, but it's an honest answer to the question because Cancellara did indeed give a free pass to GC contenders caught behind due to crashes.

The problem though is that it wasn't completely due to no fault of their own. It was the first stage of the Tour de France with less then 10km to go, at this point any serious contender should be in the front 5th of the peleton. Both Contador and Sanchez got caught out because they were to far behind.

That being said my heart did sink when I saw Euskaltel riding, Samu is one of my favorite riders in the peleton and it sucks he lost time. But that is cycling.

Many people in the front group lost more than 6". As far as I know, who gets what time in a situation like this is completely up to the commissaires' whims, right?

That's never when the race just finished.

You won't see the correct standings until late in the evening ;)
You think the jury is that fast??? :D
