20th place at 3.13. Going to be hard work for Sky trying to make sure that a break doesnt go away with one of those in it tomorrow.

Thought it was near the top of the last climb - and that was with 27km to go. Certainly were going uphill at the time from what i remember.

Then if it was on the climb, i'd bet its a sticky bottle punishment

pretty stupid for the team leader to collect bottles on a climb in front of the cameras.

I can't think of anything more controversial than giving a penalty to a serious GC contender

Sure would ruin things if Nibali got a time penalty for something stupid. If he actually did something worth penalizing, whatever, but getting a bottle is a silly reason for a penalty.

Given how common "sticky bottles" are in cycling, he doesn't deserve a penalty for that.

But if I could have my way, every race would give out penalties for that. It always bugs me seeing someone hang on to the bottle for 3-4 seconds during the exchange to get a break.

It's not fair... but I'm not going to be upset if that's what it is. That has always bugged me.

He may have been missed out of the first results (wouldnt be the first) but Scarponi is not showing up yet in the main group. Maybe taking it easy today to get in the attack tomorrow or on Sunday?

Wish i'd been videoing when a rider came past holding a bottle at about 4km to go on Avoriaz last year. Was going about 25mph:mad:

In the last Giro di Lombardia, one of the last riders (a Norwegian sky rider whose name I forgot) did the entire upper part of the San Fermo climb holding on to a spectator's car.

just re-watched nibs bottle duty. was at 22km to go, took three bottles, maybe 2-3 seconds sticky, and one brief car grab. nothing major

But isn't the sticky-bottle-thing a safety issue too? Making sure the rider has the bottle in his hand without wiggling the bike or anything. Just think about what could happen if he lost his balance and fell under the car...

Unless it's very egregious and obviously deliberate I think it's crazy to hand out punishments for that.
