This. Poels is showing us this year that he's best at short explosive climbs.
a puncheur.
Careful. Last time I suggested that, D_T yelled at me.

Nice ride by Poels. Slightly disappointed with Nibali - I do think this kind of finish suits him. The rest were more or less where expected.

Nibali is a diesel, these steep uphillsprints are not his dada, no surprise here. As in the Giro he gardually climbs better and better on longer climbs not such short uphill sprints, way too explosive which he isn't...

Rodriguez must enjoy every minute now Gilbert isn't present ;)

Nibali came second last year.

Now he falls behind. Shows how much difference there is between tired Purito and fit Purito.

And Gilbert would not have beaten Purito on this.

I know I had a discussion about Poels being able to climb. But that was about him not being a climber at all, according to you.

I never argued the point he is more puncheur than climber...You misunderstood me

Weakness? He won last year, you know, even if he was "weak" on Andorra. Jrod will easily lose at least 3 mins to Nibali in the TT, and today was his finish, not Nibali's.

Just because he wins doesnt mean there isnt weakness. He beat Mosquera but an on form Scarponi, Purito, Menchov could beat him (and yes i know Scarponi and Menchov werent that great here either).

Great win by J-Rod, delivered what was expected.

A shame for Anton, how did he manage to mess up his shape this badly. I hope Txurruka gets to ride for himself from now on. I really do hope Anton can do something on some future stage though, and not mess up the build-up for future season goals. I mean - he went in to the Giro to win the Zoncolan and he did, so why did he mess this up? I don't understand this crap.

Amets cant ride for himself. Hes got to ride for Nieve. Might get a break or 2 though.

Biggest surprise for me was Zubeldia 6th. Even when he's on top form I couldn't have had him finishing with Scarponi here

Zubeldia? Did he even get shown on TV? The man is so anonymous... :D

good news for VDB and Seeldrayers, in a belgian newspaper is stated he's (K.S.) passing his exam in the Vuelta for an eventual new contract at OPQS...
Except VDB2 signed a 4 year deal with lotto.

The best Gilbert would have beaten Purito on a single wheel on this...

just like here:

Btw Arvesen crashed with a kid in the feed zone, the kid got taken by ambulance to the hospital but reports say he's OK. Arvesen's bike frame got broken in two so it must have been a heavy crash.

Wow, Poels... I have no idea how this guy's form develops, I thought he was on the way down again, but apparently I was wrong. Although I think this kind of finish is most suited to him, we could already see that in the Tirreno. On longer climbs he gets into trouble (see: Tour de l'Ain last week). The kind of puncheur Holland needs.

Interesting that the three best young riders today were Dutch.

Gilbert last year was only 5th on this...

So why would he do better this year? We saw in the Tour on the Mur de Bretagne he doesn't always win in GT's on such finishes

Last year he was sixth on Fleche Wallone.
