jumping in here, I've watched quite a few Giro di Lombardia - it's one of my favorite finishes - and it has seemed to favor decent climbers and technical descenders. Would you all agree?

This would suggest that Purito and Nibali are favorites, perhaps Bertie as well, but Gilbert...not so much...

Do you seriously think that Rodriguez and Contador are better descenders than Gilbert

Gilbert is one of the better descenders in the pro peleton.

This is a Lombardia thread so let's not get into the Gesink debate again.

Who are the live contenders apart from Gilbert/AC?

I was thinking Pozzovivo might do something, maybe even Rabottini if he has good legs, both finished adrift of AC the other day but it might have been a tune-up for them.Who else might go well.Visconti?

I am going to the race, first race in Italy i have attended so quite excited to say the least! :)

I hope you find some good spots to see the action. I think you can rely on Nibs trying to be part of it. Cunego usually shows well here as well.

Like the avatar BTW:) Where did you find that?

Gilbert for sure. Contador is in good form obviously but without any sort of sprint he's going to struggle to win many classics. Its a solo win or nothing, which is hard when you're as heavily marked at Bertie.

let's face it guys, we all know who the winner will be...

2005 Paolo Bettini (ITA) Quick Step-Innergetic
2006 Paolo Bettini (ITA) Quick Step-Innergetic
2007 Damiano Cunego (ITA) Lampre-Fondital
2008 Damiano Cunego (ITA) Lampre
2009 Philippe Gilbert (BEL) Silence-Lotto
2010 Philippe Gilbert (BEL) Omega Pharma-Lotto
2011 Oliver Zaugg (SUI) Leopard Trek

That would be a pity. Not had a great year but has always shined here. 3 times winner?

Cunego's been on a downward spiral in his career for a while now, would be great if he could pull something off but I've started to lose hope of him ever winning another big race.

I thought Piti tended to avoid all the Italian races. I think the last time he raced there was 2008 World Championships. I don't think he has ever won in Italy.

Is he making a 'soft launch' as he would expect to be going there for the Worlds next year?

He was in the mix at Amstel but crashed on the final hill but his previous one day form seems to have deserted him. I thought he rode well without threatening in the Tour last year but these days he only seems to be a top 10 contender for grand tours and a possible stage winner.

I liked Cunego in the Giro. While he was worste than in the 2011 Tour, he attacked like crazy and eventually made the top 6

Cheers.

The avatar is from RobertMillar.net/

I think the cartoons of him were specially commissioned,a guy Richard Mitchelson done them.2014 is the 30th anniversary of his KOM title, those were the days....

I am not driving in Lombardy and don't have my bike,at the start in Bergamo then trains, ferry to Bellagio then parking up on the Ghisallo between 3-5pm with a few beers.I've stuck £10 on the Shark@14-1 with the magic sign this morning,at least he'll be involved as you correctly point out.:)
