From the Cyclingnews frontpage article:

Perhaps Schleck, Cunego and Scarponi really will need time to ride themselves into the race. You suspect however, by the time that happens, the GC battle will be even further up the road and they'll be hunting for stage wins rather than Milanese podiums.

WTF? It's a f..king prologue!

Well, they certainly paid for TV time. Andreas Dietziker (who?) got a TV moto following him today!

I always remember Andreas Dietziker and look out for him, for the stupidest of reasons.

Basque musicians Chandal Brothers made a "cover" of the song "Hegal Egiten" by the famous Basque band Itoiz, only their version changed the lyrics to make them about cycling in general, and Amets Txurruka in particular, and the title became "Pedal Egiten". On the intro they played a sample from a German commentary of a stage where Txurruka and Dietziker had gone in the break together.

And this.... "
But, to be fair, we did learn that - barring physiological miracle or acts of God - neither Frank Schleck (RadioShack), Damiano Cunego (Lampre) or Michele Scarponi (Lampre) are going to win, which is something.!
"

I was away and only just could get onto internet and immediately went on to Cyclingnews, when I was confronted by this I nearly had a heart attack.

The writer is one Kenny Pryde, who is this guy? Does he know or understand anything about cycling? Has he looked at the course?

Cant remember having seen him on any articles before he seems to have been recruited specifically for the Giro and he has a totally different style whereas he focuses on trying to be entertaining rather than giving over the facts.
I think it was the comments were made more in the interest of entertainment rather than lack of knowledge

Well I dont know what age you are but I do know Kenny Pryde has been reporting on pro cycling for longer than many of the poster's on here have been alive. He was the main corrsepondent for Winning magazine back in the 80s/ early 90s.

Not to say his reports cannot be wrong but this guy has been around a long time.

That just makes it worse.

Phil Liggett has been around for a long time as well, you know ;)

It might be a hyperbole, but frankly if it is it's not a very funny one. Certainly since he then repeats it at the end.

Congrats to Phinney- that was an amazing ride. His whole position on the bike is so graceful and he looks so imposing. Geraint and Rasmussen also did well- so did all the Garmin dudes.

Kreuziger, Basso and Hesjedal did very well.

Highlights for me. Just too d%@# busy. Sounds like a good prologue. Not surprised Phinney would be gunning for this. It would be great if he holds it for a few days. The real next stop is the Olympic trials and hoepfully London for a medal.

Still don't understand why us Staters have only one slot at the Games.

Basso did surprisingly well considering his build up. I'd say that he is for sure a contender. By the third week he will be flying.

Also this from Kenny Pryde's report:

It was, after all, BMC's first big win of 2012 (no disrespect to the Giro di Toscana win of an eager looking Alessandro Ballan, 34th at 39 seconds here).

Criterium International worth a mention?

Its good to hear Phinneys reaction to the win.

Said that its a dream to wear the pink jersey that it hasn't sunk in yet.

Great to hear that from an American. Good on you Taylor.

Because politics trumps sports. Amazing that many of the worlds top cyclists will not be able to compete because of slot limitations.

His Italian at the end of the stage was pitch perfect also. The crowd really enjoyed his win.

Appears he's now on the right team although wish he still rode for Garmin.

No it's because you don't have any decent TTs with world points. Nothing to do with politics.

His parents are terrific. A lot of history there for him to respect the pink jersey. Great stuff.:)

And he is not just saying that all of a sudden because he just won. He has said that for quite a while. I remember him saying in a video interview on Velonews it was a dream to win the prologue and wear pink some months ago.

Oh yeah, you can see its genuine. Never heard phinney talk before today but like farrar, i can see he is one of the top guys personality wise in the peloton. same can be said for the runner up today, though without the yank charm.
