he was one of the quickest riders on the final climb, so I guess it was a bit of all

glad to head that, Nibali needs them to defend pink, right now the team are a bunch of sick guys.

2nd part times:

kangert 37:02 1:19:20 => 32:18
wiggins 37:12 1:09:37 => 32:25
henao 36:47 1:10:05 => 33:18
kelderman 37:45 1:11:06 => 33:21
scarponi 36:50 1:10:16 => 33:26
evans 36:42 1:10:11 => 33:29
nibali 36:12 1:09:45 => 33:33
gesink 37:01 1:10:36 => 33:35
uran 37:02 1:10:37 => 33:35
sanchez 38:19 1:12:28 => 34:09
pozzovivo 37:51 1:12:00 => 34:09
hesjedal 37:03 1:11:22 => 34:19
santambrogio 38:04 1:13:23 => 35:19

So basically, Nibali won nearly all his time on Scarponi/Gesink/Evans in the first part.

I think the wind picking up/changing direction might have had a big part to play in this. Notice both Evans, Nibbles, Gesink and Hesjedal all struggled big time

Some other things that have caught my eye is how good a IT pozzovivo did and how he put about 3 minutes into Betancur. Also Aru did a fantastic IT as well.

Which makes sense as Nibs played to his strength.

Hesjedal is never good at long ITT, he was two minute behind Nibali today. In olympics, he was one minute behind Menchov. While in 2012 Tour, Nibali is ahead of Menchov in both ITT.
So Hejedal did just fine. fits history pattern

Great win from Alex in his first GT
He is smart to transfer from SKY to Moviestar, probably won't get a chance to ride Giro if staying in SKY

Not a great day for Betancur - plus 5'19", further down the GC to 28th.

Well, his card to play for this Giro was always to be distanced before the mountains and get some freedom for successful escapes in the mountains. So nothing wrong about his situation at this point so far. Same for Delfino.

no, he always said he wanted to win the white jersey. But nothing has happened so far, it's still well within reach

Astana:

3rd, 4th, 21st, 23rd, 76th, 98th, 120th, 124th & 135th.

That is Garmin strategy, I remembered an interview with Peter Stetina, basically he said they will just ride as casual as possible to make the time cut to conserve energy. They have no other objectives, team Claass, white jersey except the PINK.
