Battle for the overall:

BAZAYEV Assan has put time into current leader MURAVYEV D today - both from the Astana team.With Murayez having over 2 hours on some stray dog that somehow got into the race, he has been riding a strong race so far and even managed to keep ahead of Veelers who worked well with Cav yesterday.

Meanwhile Svein Tuft has really done a 'Richie Porte' with his ride and dropped over 5 minutes. He was in 2nd prior to today's stage. He's confident he'll get it back in the mountains though.

Tufts time will be very competitive for the top 5 if the conditions are unchanged throughout. Martin rode a similar course in the Dauphine (but which was 0.5km shorter) in 36:54. I think that Tuft will definitely top 10 may well top 5 and has an outside shot at the podium.

I would be surprised if anyone other than Martin gets close to going under 37 minutes.

Something happened to Terpstra? +23 at 1st intermediate, then +1.38 at 2nd intermediate. Lost 1.15 in 12.5k? Don't give a damn anymore and just go easy?

Bauer: "I pushed a bit hard a bit too early..."

“It's pretty fast up until the 12km mark,” said Jack Bauer (GRS), the rider with the third best time of the day so far. He offered a few comments on his race to LeTour.fr at the finish after posting a time that's 1'42” slower than Tuft (OGE).

“From 19km to the final corner at the end, it's a really hard headwind... at least it felt that way for me in my state of semi-consciousness. A TT on the coast is pretty rare, I guess and it'll be interesting to see what happens with the wind as the day goes on.

“Personally, there's nothing for me in this stage. The aim was to try and ride a little bit, with a little bit of pace on, so that I can give Dan [Martin] a decent appraisal of the conditions. He's obviously the only one of us on GC still and the only one of us that this stage really counts for.

“I think Dan will be alright. I really struggled between 12 and 17km: it's more up than down and I don't really defy gravity too well,” concluded the New Zealander. “Whereas Dan obviously does. Still, it'll be crucial for him to leave a bit of energy for the second half with that headwind. It's almost downhill at the beginning and I lost control a little bit and pushed a bit hard a bit too early.”

Headwind? Tuft averaged close to 53 km/h last 11k.

Don't think he tanked it on purpose as he could have been an early marker for Tony Martin. Maybe he will comment later.

No idea if thats good for TT specialists/Tony Martin or 'the field'

Seems to be a course for really powerful riders. Definately think some GC riders will struggle badly on this course. Also doubt that Froome can challenge Martin today, given that the wind doesn't change.

Lutsenko only 26 seconds down on Tuft/Boom at first chrono. Maybe he'll lose a lot of time from now on but he looks to be improving as the the Tour progresses. Promising signs.

One of the Sky riders, David Lopez has posted the slowest time at the first check. He is 1'40" behind Boom after just 9.5km.

I really don't understand why they brought this guy Better would have give a talented youngster some experience, they run in 8 from start of tdf because of this guy.

edit: maybe they want 1st and last lanterne rouge now that 1st and 2nd was denied hahaha

tuft performance was expected though, orica rides great in this tour. plus great video, awesome team.
i don't think anyone will go under 37 minutes.

There was a phone call to Jiri Jezek in Czech TV (finished at 43:11) - he stated, that in the last part there is an incredible headwind and all the guys pushing from the start will have a really hard time to keep the speed up. Let`s see, if the wind changes later on...

He's been their standout domestqiue in early season, especially Paris Nice and Pais Vasco.
