To answer the question, it's about the whole year we are talking about, let's wait for this Vuelta to finish and I dare say let's wait for the worlds, maybe some guys will watch each other while Nibs will put a 900 Watts attack like in Sheffield.

How can a one-day race change who the best GT rider is?

Exactly, it's Contador by a mile. Also even if Alberto retired tomorrow he would still be a better GT rider than Nibali even if Vincenso rides on for a few more years.

The question is not whether Contador throughout his career is a better GT rider than Nibali, but in 2014 though.

Nibali for me, because he comftably won the tour and the tour is greater than the Giro, which is greater than the Vuelta.

Perhaps is Quintana comesback and podiums the Vuelta after his crash he could arguably be the best GT rider of 2014.

Bertie the better climber but Nibs the better overall GT rider.

GTs are about more than climbing and time trials - they are a test of the rider as a whole. The way Nibali rode in Sheffield and over stage 5 gives him the edge in my opinion.

Consistency, and staying upright and out of trouble are also a big part of GT riding and in that respect Contador has to lose some ground for crashing out the tour - I know that will be an unpopular sentiment round here so flame away! ;)

It is an opinion that the Tour is greater than the Giro and the Giro greater than the Vuelta. Yes the Tour is the most popular but that is it. I think a lot of "year round" fans enjoy the other gt's more than the Tour.

Completley agree i said this at the time look at the diff style their Nibali is on last legs, the excuse was it was a short climb which i hope they know would turn to minutes in HC MTF.

Worlds is not hard enough

I assume Valverde will be Spain's leader for Worlds? Bertie and co. domestics to try and make the race hard enough to get ride of Sagan etc

Edit: we might therefore see Bertie chasing down an attack of Nibali...

Dude Contador has failed once in 1 GT that is all by abandoning, the better GT rider has won 7 GT and his in is way to 8 not the guy who has 3. People forget Nibali's crash in his Giro win on a wet downhill the guy went quite far and he had no injuries, that is just luck.

This poll is just a popularity contest. Even if he wins the Worlds, fanboys will vote for him mindlessly.

No matter what happens a fair number of people on both sides will vote for their guy regardless.

Agree Bertie is the better overall but the question was about 2014 ;):p

Is this another of your "independent observer" posts?

He does have a point though. Just check the clinic. The Froome thread is always hot while the Contador thread isn't even on the first two pages, even though AC is having an extreme year.

Contador get's praise while Froome gets spitted, that's the way this forum is (to a large extent).

I was referring to cineteq's earlier posts during the TDF, rough summary: everyone who thinks Contador and Froome were bigger favorites than Nibali before the race, is influenced by the cycling media. Independent observers knew Nibali was the biggest favorite.

The only reason why the Contador thread isn't even on the second page while Froome's always hot, is because not even his fans defend Contador.

That is the same reason why the Nibali threads don't get many posts, nor do the Abarca or Katusha threads.

But this isn't a discussion for this forum. . .

Last time I checked the Froome thread is mostly rants and haters posting their thought about Froome. The defenders sure are there, but in my experience it's not like their posts are the majority.
