So now that Nairito has been forced to abandon & the Alien seems like human, Is it fair to say that Contador's likely Vuelta victory isn't going to be seen as "great" ?

after all, his main competition isn't great anymore................ just saying......

"No way, he deserved it", "He would've won anyway". Funny enough this will be the same people who said Nibali wasn't a worthy 2014 TdF winner.

Nibali because TDF remains the most important GT of the year, the other two don't have the same prestige.Too bad for this because in terms of spectacle often Il Giro and La Vuelta surpass it.I know this sucks, but that's the way it is. But it doesn't matter for me,still love more La Vuelta even if Velasco's gonna win it:D

So you also think Evans was a better GT rider (remember it's about the better rider, not the better results) than Contador in 2011?

The same with Basso and Landis in 2006?

You may have noticed that there are still plenty of challengers left and he really has to earn it, unlike Nibali who got the win handed to him?

I know that it doesn't look right, but is all about winning the TDF.Yes Cadel win trumps Contador,TDF winner=the better GT rider of that year. For all this we should be grateful to that Lance guy who inoculated in the public mentality that there is just one GT.You see these days a lot of cyclist using Il Giro and La Vuelta as prep races.I'm tired especially by those who come to La Vuelta to prepare for Worlds,**** this is a GT,show some respect FFS.

This was setup as if Contador wins La Vuelta. But Quintana, the big favorite, was not there so Contador "gets the win handed to him"? Same thing, right? It's time to stop the double standard. If Contador wins he deserves it.

After what Contador showed last sunday, he was the big favorite. Quintana wheelsucked all the way to get back and was dropped at la Zubia.

And without the crash, he was about to lose more than a minute to Contador in the TT all the same, he was already 21 secs off AC's pace in the first intermediate which included the climb of the day.

You can't compare, Nibali gets his *** kicked everytime AC enters the same race, no wonder people are questioning his Tour win especially when you know AC was in alien form, and hasn't been dropped a single time this year (apart from 5 seconds lost to Rodriguez in a sprint at Volta a catalunya ) .

AC has basically crushed everyone this season, there's nothing questionable.

Do you also think Contador was a better GT rider than Rasmussen in 2007?

Now this is a hard one, i was rooting for Rasmussen,i was so ****ed off that he couldn't win Le Tour.In my mind Rasmussen will always be the better GT rider in that TDF, but since Contador got the win and Rasmussen got the short hand of the stick, yes the answer stays the same,Contador was the better GT rider because his win is in the scripts.

So 60 people think that Alberto, with 0 GT wins and 0stages win up to now in 2014 GTs, is better than Vincenzo with Tour de France win and 4 stages win. U can't fight faith with reason.

You can't have a proper discussion when only looking at facts ;)

Really we can't have a meaningful conversation at all until the Vuelta is over.

Yep.

@ IronCQ and Pentacycle: I think the votes are indicative of people thinking about the Vuelta, which is--appropriately for this discussion--the last GT of the year.

Incidentally, I enjoyed the Vuelta more than the Giro or Tour last year, and this year it's starting to shape up the same way. (Except for the stones stage, of course. :D)

Contador easily. I love Nibbles and I'd have him above Froome but when on form nobody is better than Contador

It's largely meaningless. There's more contador fans on this site, so that why so many are picking him.

Anyway, it will be very obvious by the end of the Vuelta. If Contador is 9.40min ahead of Valverde (who finished 9.40 behind Nibali in the Tour) then we'll know who's been better this year.

Valverde has always been much better at the Vuelta and especially this year.
It is as stupid as saying Péraud is a better GT rider than Valverde.

And Contador isn't peaking in this Vuelta, he is miles from his Tour form, he isn't even in Dauphiné form so there's nothing to compare:
-Valverde is much stronger
-AC's far from his Tour peak, if you don't believe so, then maybe you think Nibali would've beaten AC too by approximately 9 min a the Tour? which doesn't make any sense as what you're saying.

Looking just at palmares at this point to determine the better GT rider isn't really a fair comparison when Contador crashed out of the Tour before he could go toe-to-toe with Nibali and when the Vuelta's not even over yet.

I'm only joking about the 9min thing, I know it means nothing ;)

Although, I think that as you say Alberto's form isn't near his best, so you'd have to pick Nibali this year. The poll is only about this year, right? Not over all.

Well, yes he is nowhere near his best but I think people are voting Contador because he comes back from injury and is already in decent form, and is leading at the moment against tougher rivals.

Also, I believe this poll is only about GT's, not about all year long. If you were to consider all the season, well then AC wins hands down (1st TA - 1 st Basque country - 2nd Dauphiné, he only lost because no team at all to protect him, and also he hasn't been dropped a single time this year.)

On the other hand Nibali didn't win a thing before the Tour, he was beaten by Froome at Romandie + AC at the Dauphiné.
