It's a shame Kittel pulled out of the Giro. He totally owned the competition and might won 5 stages already by now, putting out a Pettachi be like performance.

Let's watch out what he can do at the Tour. Cav seems to be back on fire as well. It's gonna be a tough time for Sagan

Which of Viggiano and Montecassino do you think he could've won?!?

Points Classification

Will Kittel get to Paris?
Is Cavendish the second fastest man on the Tour?
Is Kristoff the most likely outsider to have a crack at it? I think he's a certainty to finish in the top 3 in this.

Thought?

Last I heard there was some concern over an injury Kittel had at German Nats. Not like Kittel will be gunning for Green, but it could open up more wins for Greipel and Cav (and more Green points for them as well in their battle with Sagan).

I think Kittel may take it this year. Specially because Sagan seems to be a bit slower so I don't see him finishing so close to the top3 in the flat bunch sprints last year. I think guys like Kristoff, Demare, Coquard or Van Poppel may take important points from him.
Still, I would cheer for Sagan if he goes for it the Hushovd way. I know the point system is different now but I would like to see him on breaks. Maybe with his good friend Cancellara, both being awesome in the HC descents

i might sound stupid, but what is the "scoring system" mentioned in OP?

i havent gone through the rules book, but i would appreciate if someone could throw some light into it.

Cav for green jersey. the Mark2 combo will ruin other's chances. without the Brit champ jersey, i think cav will have better luck. And, he has the best drilled train.

Kittel had a cramp. i dont think tht is going to be relevant for the tour.

Greipel, i'm not sure.

Sagan is a better rider to earn the other points. With resurgent Degenkolb, he is going to have real competition.

Based on these numbers I still see Sagan as the favorite. He is simply the most consistent over many different terrains. He has stated the green jersey as his big goal and I think he'll be willing to use a little more energy than the "pure sprinters" getting to the intermediate sprints as well.

Still waiting for the biased points system to go away. But given what happened in the Giro, I guess I'm in for a long haul.

Guess I'll wait for the Vuelta for a meaningful points jersey scrap.

I don't think the Vuelta points competition has the best design. The last three years have been won by Valverde and Mollema....both climbers.

This is how I see the current sprinting order based on the length of the straight finish

100m short, technical or slightly uphill sprints = Sagan
200m = Cav or Gorilla ... if dropped of by their train at 1st position nobody is passing them
300m bunch sprint = Kittel .... nobody can challenge him on long and wide roads

Sagan is not alone for the shorter versions.
Sagan is not alone for the hilly versions.

With too many points given in the intermediate sprints, the green jersey will be fought in the peloton as well. Sagan can reap the extra points and maintain the green jersey,

Kittel did well in last yr, but he was not looking for green jersey. if he looks at green jersey as well, then the intermediate sprints will get bit more competition. Cav had a bad tour last yr.

if we take this as a fight between the four and the FDJ rider, then things would get a bit more interesting.

I'm wondering if Matthews could challenge Sagan?

Not this year, Matthews will be focused on winning the same stages Sagan will target, that will be an interesting battle in it's self. The results of these stages could influence who will win Green. I hope in the coming years Matthews does target the Green.

Sagan for the Green with Cav pushing all the way.

I'm going with Cav this year. He had a far better build up and has a train that works better than last year. Martin, Trentin, Petacchi and Renshaw is one of the best lead outs you can get. And with Kittel, Greipel and Demare all better than Sagan on flat stages it will be very hard for the Slovakian to take it home again. But who knows ...
