Ji C covers 39km in just under 22 mins according to the tour tracker.

Is he allowed to carry out to set the hour record?

Ji Cheng actually fears this TT the most. He has serious knee pain since the early days of thsi tour and is aware that in the TT he won't be able to hide behind a pack for a moment of relief. He hopes to the time cute.

And he does seems to have a really hard time atm.

The official time schedule predicts a total time for the course of 1h 07mins. The time limit is 25% = 16:45 mins.

I don't know if the time is realistic. It suggests an avg. speed of 48.36 km/h. A bit fast for such a bumpy road. Maybe 46 km/h is more realistic? But it's hard to judge just by looking at the profile. 70 mins mentioned by thequestionmark = 46.29 km/h.

Martin did 54.271 km/h at the 1st TT at the 2013 Tour (33 km flat).
Froome did 37.245 km/h at the 2nd TT at the 2013 Tour (32 km really hilly).

This year's stage is much closer to the 1st TT of last year, of course.

1h 07 + 25% = 1 h 23:45
Cheng is more than 5 minutes inside that. All should be safe.

This is the first time I remember hearing Valverde be anything except so positive he borders on self-parody

Seems to me even he's not confident in himself.
Besides, every day for a week he's been saying how exhausted he is

Geraint Thomas could do well today. Unlike Porte who is cooked, Thomas doesn't seem in bad shape for his standards and took it easy at Hautacam, coming in together with a tired Porte 19 minutes behind Nibali.

Moose's projected finishing order for the 54km TT:

1. Panzerwagen
2. Panzerwagen's shadow +25
3. Nibali + 45
4. TJvG + 57
5. Dumoulin + 1.01

Tom Dumoulin is a very handsome man.
