We are talking about a guy who finished 20 minutes down on every mountain instead of being up there to help his team leader in 2011. If he beats said team leader now...:eek:
People have fish memory here.

I've look at the profiles, and Chamrousse is not suited for a short range attack. The first half is by far the hardes, averageing like 8,5-9%. After that, 5,5 and 6,5% gradients kick in and it might be impossible to ride away.
Contador also needed the massive gradients on Etna...

Eh? Do me a favor and find me one mountain stage with an uphill finish at the 2011 Giro or Tour in which he didn't lose at least 10 minutes. I've had a quick look and saw he finished 40 minutes down at one point:eek:

This could (should) be carnage. It probably won't though. 25 Frenchmen and 1 Spaniard up the road, Rodriguez to win. Contador to gain 10 seconds on Porte and 20 on Nibali.

Garmin to destroy the peleton on the first two mountains. Nibali gets isolated. Valverde has 4 guys in the breakaway but fails to jump between the groups since Nibali sits on his wheel. Pace goes down and 80 men are together on second to last climb but nobody wants to attack Nibali despite the fact he is alone and Tinkoff are setting the steady pace. Talansky and Costa attack. Nobody follows. Talansky outsprints Costa for stage win, 20 seconds in front of 25-men group who comes together.

Fixed it for you. Porte was quite useful then. If Contador had fell of the mountain, Porte would have been there to catch him:D

To be fair I think Nibali has improved massively since. Will be harder to drop him.

It wasn't about Nibali, but on what gradient Contador can attack (in a headwind and get away).

I thought for sure that he didn't lose that much on Montevergine, then I went ahead and checked and he lost 15 minutes:D

I know that ;) I just don't think he'll be able to drop Nibali on that gradient this time

Despite the fact that Porte has an awful Giro in '11 he has shown his stage racing talent ever since he turned pro. I wouldn't be surprised if he is fighting for 3rd this year.

I hope Porte remembers to wash his hands otherwise he might have another T-A on his hands.
