I mean orica raced negative the last 30km while they could take hold of pink more solidly they also had Matthews who was almost certain to win and keep pink. So I didnt like that, but there is something to say for it.
Then there are 20 teams that know Matthews will win the sprint for sure and what are all of them doing? Creating sprint trains? Wtfffff

Attack attack attack... Out of all teams only Sky understood.

I think they are all scared of getting caught up in crashes, so are even more desperate than usual to be right at the front by the end. Pretty defensive racing all around.

Yes, but in a bunch of 50 riders? I understand this behaviour in a flat stage.

Now tinkoff rode a fast pace all day. If they wanted to keep the break at 2-3 minutes i'd understand, but they just work hard to reel in the break. Just to stay safe? That's beyond me.

The stage would have come back together no matter what Orica did because Tinkoff was always going to chase hard enough to catch everyone. Not sure why but that is what the would have done.

Not sure why. That's normally what everybody says when Sky pulls all day. Tinkoff went full *** today.

Orica do need to make the most of these early days for publicity, as they will be easily overwhelmed after the first week and quickly forgotten. Most serious contenders are perfectly happy to let them have their fun and take it easy while they "preen" up front as if it matters.

Sky know besat what's really needed here & I reckon they'll benefit greatly from their wisdom next week.

Good tactics by Orica, some will say it was negative but they won so they achieved their goal. They were lucky no one attacked though, only Gerrans and Clarke to chase.

Kiriyenka and Henao getting dropped early, saving energy or just not good enough?

Bole is still there

Yes .... I also think Orica are rather an odd team, but I can't even say why. They just strike me as a dull team for some reason. ... Perhaps it's due to them only being there for TTTs and the early sprints? .... Impossible to say exactly. .... Still .... cycling needs the full range of teams to make life more interesting, so let them have their fun for a few days.

Saving energy on a 2nd Cat climb ?

Not good enough obviously. Also helps explain the TTT result.

Going easy for the coming stages, but I don't think it was good. I think Sky is weaker than expected. Viviani, Puccio, Eisel and now Kiriyenka and Henao who won't be much help in the mountains.

What mountains?
Cause I'm expecting Henao to be super strong in the third week actually.

There were several significant riders in the breakaway and BMC also gave it a bit of a dig at the end. Had Fellini started later he mightv'e had a good shot. Astana and Tinkoff-Saxo are way more focused on the GC, as were most of the other riders in what was a very reduced "peloton". I think only Katusha and Southeast are wondering if they could've played it any other way. Like it or not defense win championships; this is true in pretty much all sports.

Astana had 8 riders. Plenty of options wether they are GC focused or not. Lulu is great in last km attacks.
Now they made a sprinttrain ffs.

The significant riders in the break would've been no problem if they had gotten 2 minutes.

Update from cyclingnews.

Dr. Massimo Branca of the Giro’s medical team was the first doctor on the scene, and he tended to the prone Pozzovivo until the ambulance arrived some seven minutes later, having been held up by a combination of the fragmented peloton and narrow, twisting roads.

Once the ambulance arrived, Pozzovivo was immobilised, placed on a stretcher and driven off to hospital in Sestri Levante. Shortly afterwards, Dr. Giovanni Tredici, the race’s chief medical officer, explained that while Pozzovivo’s injuries were serious, he had not suffered a traumatic brain injury and had remained conscious.

“Pozzovivo’s situation is serious but under control. We’re not in an emergency situation,” Dr. Tredici told RAI. “The rider is conscious and is breathing by himself.”

At the finish in Sestri Levante, Pozzovivo’s teammate Carlos Betancur said that he had learned of the incident only in the final kilometres of the stage.

Very happy that he is ok and nothing has happened to his brain. He'll be fine for the Vuelta.

Let us hope so, there are other horrible injuries besides brain damage.
