2015 Giro, St. 6: Montecatini – Castiglione della Pescaia

I am so sick of all the interest being taken out of bike races by crashes ALWAYS knocking out the main contenders. Boonen and Cancellara, one or both, every year in living memory. Quintana, Cavendish, Contador and Froome crashing out of countless GTs. It just goes on and on...

I'm over it. I'm just going to go and ride my bike. Racing is just dumb.

Sprint finishes shouldnt even be in cycling. Biggest waste of time. Go to the track

I agree.....never liked them!!!

Yes sure.

And I think the idea of taking time at the 3 or 10 km mark for CG contenders is also too risky. Imagine the guys would fight it out there to get the last touch on the peloton... Better would be to take the time at the 50 km mark, and everybody takes a break for lunch, says hello to the helicopter guy... hell no, skip cycling all together. How about that?

My opinion? If a race is 150 km long and finishes after 150 km, it should end there. For everybody.
As some lone quality poster said: It´s the fault of CG guys wanting to be "safe" at the front.... Just have a look at GT flat stages. Seldom is there a gap for the last 50 riders of the peloton. And if it is, it´s once or twice per GT.

Got to agree with this.If the GC guys are dumb and can't stay out of harm's way they are to blame. You can't stay there with the sprinters and hope if there is a crash you'll be ok.The problem is that they prefer to assume this risk then to lose a few seconds, which as you said is rarely going to happen anyway.

Thanks... And further: If Olga wasn´t so self centered but instead let his experts do the job, even a injured AC would be no problem. But this arrogant hack needs to sit in the car and call the shots: AC wins the Giro and no one else... And now its back firing right in his smeary face: Never chase your own rider, especially if it´s one who can win a GT if given a 5-10 min cushion.

Actually, the reason Contador did not put on the maglia rosa was not due to pain, but because he had ice on the shoulder and could not maneuver the arm (as said by Stefano Feltrin).
And yet, Contador said his shoulder popped out again on the podium and that that's why he didn't put on the maglia rosa.

You simply can't believe a single word he says. Could be he's perfectly fine, could be he's decided to withdraw as we speak. We can't know by listening to him.

Small correction, it popped out in the pre-podium tent when they were using it as a makeshift medical tent, which is what delayed the ceremony.

Yes, in that sense Contador is like Cancellara: impossible to believe anything once you take a look at past history.

maybe it popped out when he put on the T-S jersey

I find it odd that the GC guys try to 'stay safe' by jamming at the front with the sprint teams on flat stages. That means 200 guys trying to be at the front...that's not staying safe. If the GC guys would ride just behind the trains, they might lose 10 seconds which is much better than a crash. I've been a cycling fan since the mid 80's. There have been sprint crashes on flat stages for as long as I can remember, but the GC guys didn't start getting involved until LA made it cool. Disclaimer: I have CRS so my memory could be wrong! :)

You do realize that none of the above necessarily means that anyone is (intentionally) lying?

Brailsford comments:

http://www1.skysports.com/cycling/news/21683/9850212/dave-brailsford-no-need-to-distance-fans-despite-giro-ditalia-crash

Team Sky principal Sir Dave Brailsford believes there is no need to distance fans from riders at cycle races despite Thursday’s pile-up on stage six of the Giro d’Italia apparently being caused by a spectator.

Around 15 riders crashed when a fan’s camera appeared to clip Daniele Colli’s arm and caused the Italian to fall into the path of his fellow competitors.

Colli suffered a compound fracture of his left upper arm, but the highest-profile victim of the incident was Alberto Contador, who dislocated his left shoulder and will decide on Friday morning whether he is fit enough to remain at the race.

All of Brailsford’s Team Sky riders avoided the crash and although he sympathises with those involved, he told Sky Sports News HQ that the incident does not warrant fans being moved away from race routes.

“One of the great things about this sport is that the fans get such a close proximity [to the riders],” he said. “It’s one of the sports where the fans are closest to the actual competitors.

“On the great mountain stages you see the waves of fans opening as the riders ride up and it would be a real shame to lose that.

“It is inevitable, given the number of people who come out and watch the sport that every now and then there is going to be an incident, but I don’t think it’s too bad.

“The noise and the excitement it produces and the environment that it creates is so good that it would be a shame to change that, and to be honest, we don’t see that many accidents, so I would be comfortable leaving it as it is.”

Team Sky leader Richie Porte is third in the general classification after six stages, 20 seconds behind Contador and 18 seconds adrift of second-placed Fabio Aru.

Brailsford is happy with the Australian’s progress so far and admitted the race is going to plan.

He added: “I’m happy. We decided to take a very controlled approach to the start of this race. It’s a very long race. We are well positioned and Richie is in great form. I think we are in the perfect position just now.

“We didn’t really want the [leader’s] jersey just yet. We don’t want to take the responsibility of having to lead the race just yet, so our game plan is looking at the long term and playing the long game and biding our time for the right moment.”

No ***

Re: 2015 Giro, St. 6: Montecatini – Castiglione della Pescai

Idiotic from Brailsfraud. If it was Richie with a broken arm or dislocated shoulder he'd say different things.

By the way, as someone on twitter mentioned, this is all very funny considering Sky always shield off or fence off the fans from their riders
