Vesica said:
AC, I send my team again by PM. Send it already yesterday afternoon, but I don't see myself in the OP list.

Apologies: your team was indeed received and logged. A hazard of being last in alphabetical order I suppose. As a teacher, perhaps I should check whether Zach Zywowski has been marked in the register all term.

My Team

I decided that in general I was going to go for cobbled riders as these seemed to have a higher percentage of points generally than hilly classic riders who as a rule pick up more stage race points.

VANMARCKE Sep(887)

I expect him to be a solid pick, he may even win a monument.

BOONEN tom(783)

While obviously nowhere near last years bagain I think he will score similarly to Vanmarcke

STYBAR Zdenek(646)

I had a choice between him and EdBos and I just felt that EdBos is form is not good enough even though Ed Bos would have increased my low end budget.

STANNARD IAN(250)

After last seasons injury I think he should be good value.

ROWE LUKE(127)

Good early season form - I think he will be a solid pick, picking up pleny of top 10's.

HENAO MONTOYA Sergio Luis(92)

Slightly risky pick but if he does ride and shows some form then he will proove good value.

MOSER Moreno(87)

At his cost I felt he is good value.

GAUDIN Damien(66)

Felt much the same way as I did about Moser

This left me with a low budget to chose the remaining riders from

KING Edward(25)

His schedule says Dwars, E3, Gent-W, RVV, SChedeprijs and PR

So when I had 25 points left he made the team.

TURGIS ANTHONY(20)

Young neo-pro who has some good one day U23 results.
Scheduled for Omloop

DOMBROWSKI Joseph Lloyd(10)

Could pick something up in Ardennes races.

KERKHOF Tim (6)

Down to start Omloop - could get a few races with Roompot

My team. Was very much in doubt about Vanmarcke (and Goss/Van Lerberghe) instead of Boasson Hagen/Gasparotto/Turgot. But ended up in the end chosing the safe points from Vanmarcke.

$: Italian Gigolo's team was 18 points overbudget, so I removed an 18 point rider. That left 11 riders and no spare to buy a 12th. Rather than leave an empty slot (though I suppose I may as well have done so) I told him that, if he didn't get back to alter the team, I would allocate him the first (alphabetically) picked free-pick in the season long game. At least Jens Adam is of a nationality where one could imagine him getting a ride in some of these races, second alphabetically was Ismail Aksoy.

Collective Wisdom Team:
If we take the top 11 riders on popularity, and then the cheapest of the 3 riders tied for 12th, we have:
STANNARD Ian
MOSER Moreno
HAUSSLER Heinrich
GAUDIN Damien
STYBAR Zdenek
VANDENBERGH Stijn
VANMARCKE Sep
VANSUMMEREN Johan
POZZATO Filippo
PAOLINI Luca
DEVENYNS Dries
HENAO MONTOYA Sergio Luis

That team is overbudget, at 3204 points, but that is partly balanced out by the inclusion of Henao, who we are told will not be fit to race until May anway. Gives us a stalking horse to aim at anyway.

Ooops picks.

I'll predict now that those 10 teams who have Henao, and the 7 with Boom, will be kicking themselves, for race fitness and team licencing reasons respectively.

Cheapest and dearest
4 free riders in the game: Rollin picked three times, Blain and Soler once each, and Adams "imposed" as a twelfth man.
The most expensive picks are:
GILBERT Philippe 1696 points 1 team (AG)
CANCELLARA Fabian 1049 7 (CaptCavman, Crevaison, Hugo87, ItalianGigolo, Jancouver, MellowVelo, Murali)
VANMARCKE Sep 887 17
COLBRELLI Sonny 882 1 (Trudgin)
MEERSMAN Gianni 850 1 (Los Brolin)
BOONEN Tom 783 9
WELLENS Tim 748 1 (Vesica)
ULISSI Diego 691 1 (Just Some Guy)
STYBAR Zdenek 646 17
CAVENDISH Mark 642 1 (Oliveira)

Most popular team, not too much of a surprise to me.

VANMARCKE Sep
BOONEN Tom
VANDENBERGH Stijn
STANNARD Ian
HAUSSLER Heinrich
STUYVEN Jasper
MOSER Moreno
VANSUMMEREN Johan
GAUDIN Damien
HAYMAN Mathew

ROLLIN Dominique

I think having a popular time liberates my of having to explain my picks, so I'll tell about those I didn't pick but wanted to pick.

My last minute decisions:
ROELANDTS vs. VANDENBERGH
Will both be decent/good picks, but Roelandts' illness made me not take a risk. Besides, I like Vandenbergh better.

CIMOLAI vs. STUYVEN
Cimolai will surely be a good pick as well I think, but I just had to pick Stuyven. Why? Because I've taken him since as long as I can remember and I really believe he'll become an exceptionally good rider, don't think this year yet but I just can't risk missing him.

DOMBROWSKI OUT VOOR SELIG
Well, I need to use my last few points on someone. Who knows, maybe I'll get them back.

TURGOT
He didn't make the cut, but I would've liked to include him as I think he'll be good value for money too. But when I had to choose, I found some riders to be less risky/more profitable in the end. But I think we'll be seeing him too this season, there just wasn't a good place for him in my team.

Popular picks I didn't pick:
17: STYBAR Zdenek
16: POZZATO Filippo
12: PAOLINI Luca
11: DEVENYNS Dries

Well, I didn't consider Pozzato and Paolini. But yeah, who knows: Paolini is really cheap and won't damage you too much if he fails and Pozzato might do well, but I don't think so. Devenyns will maybe get his 150 points back, but then again he won't score any much bigger I think. Stybar is someone I would've really liked in my, but two big guys on my team were enough, and so I've decided for Boonen and Vanmarcke instead.

The most likely scenario for me to fail is if Boonen has a bad classics season and Stybar has an awesome one, but I feel like Boonen is focused and determine to do great, which is a good sign.

So good luck everyone, and thanks for hosting AC!

Edit: man, the Collective Wisdom team is good. I would've liked that team too. Would be cool if it won.

Day 1: Sud Ardeche and Omloop Het Volk

CQ hasn't posted these results yet, but I think the only in-game scorer in the Ardeche was Felline in third, so our first leaders, for about half an hour, were DJW, Scrool07 and Italian Gigolo. (Edit: Edet also picked up 5 points for AG in that race)

They have all been wiped out like a breakaway with HTC chasing a stage win though, with far more points being taken in the Omloop. Stannard's near-ubiquity is already pretty much justified, as recouping half your price is a perfectly acceptable return in this game, and while NairoQ, Alykaptan, LightBing and Karaev will be pleased to have had 4 of the top ten in that race, Del1962 with 5 of them will almost certainly be the overnight leader.

Edit: results now seem to be complete, so putting todays scores together we have:
(Rider/points/teams)
STANNARD Ian 140 37
BOONEN Tom 72 9
VANDENBERGH Stijn 62 17
VANMARCKE Sep 54 17
STYBAR Zdenek 42 17
FELLINE Fabio 40 3
GILBERT Philippe 36 1
ROWE Luke 30 3
THEUNS Edward 12 8
MARCATO Marco 11 1
BURGHARDT Marcus 8 2
OFFREDO Yoann 5 7
BOASSON HAGEN Edvald 5 7
SENECHAL Florian 5 3
TSATEVICH Alexei 5 2
SCH?R Michael 5 1
EDET Nicolas 5 1

So the table now reads:
1 Del1962 338
2 NairoQ 328
3 Alykaptan 316
4 LightBing 308
5 Karaev 306

It would be interesting to analyse which type of rider, cobbles or hilly, is more picked. For instance my team is almost solely composed of cobbled classics riders because these are cheaper than hilly riders who also tend to score in GT's and week long races.

I guess overall there are more cobbled riders as some of them are also good in hilly terrain (Gilbert) plus in this game there are more points in the cobbled classics. Also strong hilly riders tend to do only Ardennes, not smaller races whereas the cobbled riders ride many of the cobbled classics.

Edit: results now seem to be complete, so putting todays scores together we have:
(Rider/points/teams)
STANNARD Ian 140 37
BOONEN Tom 72 9
VANDENBERGH Stijn 62 17
VANMARCKE Sep 54 17
STYBAR Zdenek 42 17
FELLINE Fabio 40 3
GILBERT Philippe 36 1
ROWE Luke 30 3
THEUNS Edward 12 8
MARCATO Marco 11 1
BURGHARDT Marcus 8 2
OFFREDO Yoann 5 7
BOASSON HAGEN Edvald 5 7
SENECHAL Florian 5 3
TSATEVICH Alexei 5 2
SCH?R Michael 5 1
EDET Nicolas 5 1

You missed my unique pick Pim Lighthart (5 points) in this list, but my points for day 1 are correct.

I didn't go for a expensive rider this time and I'm curious how it pans out. I wanted to have Theuns and Ligthart therefore there wasn't enough points for Vanmarcke who I have in the main game. I might regret this however.
I guess EBH won't score that much but I submitted my team pretty early I didn't want to change it again. And before submitting I tried for a team without EBH and with Vanmarcke but I wasn't satisfied with this team either.
I do hope to do better than last year.

I'm surprised Ian Stannard is not on every team and Vansummeren of less than half of the teams. Also that Ligthart is a unique pick.

Apparently not all the scores fed through from team pages to the master score page on the spreadsheet. If there are any Excel experts out there who might be abe to help, please let me know, as the viability of the game is very dependent on the reliability of my spreadsheet.

Meanwhile, I think this is what should have been the day 1 standings:

Thought for a long time about Ligthart, but he didn't make my final team. He seems to be in good shape, but doubting if can be competitive in a stronger spring classic field.

Theuns was one of my first picks, not cheap, but also not expensive. Shows already his potential I guess.

So far I missed quite some points from riders just finishing outside the CQ points...

Quite a lot points to earn today, happy to see half of my team lining up:

VANMARCKE
MOSER
STANNARD
GAUDIN
STUYVEN
HAYMAN

I suspect someone with Cancellara will take the lead today.
