Ronde van Vlaanderen

Scoring riders
The highest finisher to have been selected for our game is Theijs Benoot, a unique, and very wise, pick by Los Brolin. You might or might not believe me when I say that he was a very late removal from my shortlist. However, Brolin selected none of the other top ten riders, Boom, Roelandts and Stybar, who were fairly popular.

Position, Name, Points, teams
5 BENOOT Tiesj 112 1
6 BOOM Lars 100 7
8 ROELANDTS Jürgen 80 10
9 STYBAR Zdenek 70 17
11 OSS Daniel 54 6

16 BURGHARDT Marcus 32 2
17 DE VREESE Laurens 30 2
18 MARCATO Marco 28 1
21 DEVENYNS Dries 22 11
26 HAUSSLER Heinrich 12 23
27 LEUKEMANS Björn 10 1
30 OFFREDO Yoann 6 7

Between us, we chose 35 of the 5 pointers, including STANNARD Ian, GAUDIN Damien, VANDENBERGH Stijn, VANMARCKE Sep, VANSUMMEREN Johan and PAOLINI Luca, each of whom are on at least a dozen teams.

Points today
Los Brolin had Benoot, but it is Search, the only manager to have selected the other three top ten finishers to have impinged on our collective consciousness, who tops the day's scoring table. Indeed, ten of his twelve team members scored points today.

Standings
Game leader Geraint Too Fast was yet again one of our top scorers (4th on the day), and with the relative failure of DJW (Stybar was his only decent placing today), his lead now extends to over 200 points. Asdfgh was only slightly outscored by Geraint, and swaps podium places with DJW. Search is the biggest riser inside the top ten (7th to 4th), and Karaev re-enters that select group.
Other teams making significant moves up the table are Commodoro, Murrjt and Oliveira, moving up 8, 7 and 6 places respectively.

Scheldeprijs
Late, as warned, but the sprintcrash special deserves its write-up.

Theuns moves into positive points territory within this game, which only three selected riders had done previously, but the real star pick was the other top ten finisher who is named in this game, as Marini moved himself up to a 525% return in one fell move.

7 MARINI Nicolas 42 1

25 MARKUS Barry 5 1

Points today:
The combination of Theuns and Marini gives a clear leader on the day, while half the teams, including the collective wisdom squad, failed to score at all.

Standings:
Asdfgh101 is one of the managers to have selected Theuns, so Geraint's advantage at the top is closed to a 'mere' 118 points. No-one else in the top 6 scored, but none of them lost positions either. Not My Circus is the biggest mover in the top ten, rising from 9th to 7th, while Tom Jelte fell three places and out of the top ten, replaced by the only team that had three scoring riders in this race, Rote Laterne. Joelsim's top score earned him a 6 place rise, but did not get him into the top half.

Paris-Roubaix

Once again, most of the top ten on the day were too expensive, or too unlikely, to have been selected, so only three of them were picked, but that included Stybar, who has been the best scoring rider relevant to our little diversion by a long way. (Kristoff and Degenkolb have scored more points in the races in question, but at three times the price were left unpicked). Vanmarcke, equal in popularity with Stybar, moves up to be the second best scoring rider in the game. Benoot and Rowe move into positive scores today, but were not very popular picks and Boom follows up his 6th in the Ronde to become a fairly worthwhile investment for seven teams.

Scores on the day
4 teams managed to put Stybar and Boom together: GPBlanco, Search, Tom Jelte and Trudgin. Del1962 combined Stybar and Rowe to break up that foursome, and Karaev deserves special mention for a triple comprising Boom, Rowe and Vanmarcke. The rest of the top ten today had put Stybar and Vanmarcke together.

Standings
As we move to the Ardennes for the final 4 races, Geraint opens his lead by a further 54 points (Vanmarcke's haul on the day). Second place on the day has elevated Search to the podium. The day's top scorer, GPBlanco, breaks into the top five, and Tom Jelte enters the top ten with one of the larger jumps of the day, although the highest positional rise is down near the foot of the table, where Kazistuta leaps five places to the dizzy heights of 38th.

The riders likely to feature in the Ardennes are mainly expensive, and so haven't featured large in the selections. Only one team invested really heavily in the remaining 4 races: AG who bought Gilbert is however dead last at present. Are there enough points available through the bargain picks most teams are relying on to bring about much change in the upper reaches?

From this point onwards I won't score any points, maybe Hoogerland 5 points at Amstel.

While the cobbled specialist rest their rattled bones, the few hilly specialists in the game have their chance to make an impact. Today's scoring riders are:

Pos, Name, points, teams
3 GILBERT Philippe 72 1
7 FELLINE Fabio 42 3
10 DEVENYNS Dries 26 11

24 DILLIER Silvan 5 4
26 MEERSMAN Gianni 5 1
28 CANOLA Marco 5 1
30 TANNER David 5 2

Scores today
More than half the teams scored nothing today, and those who did mainly only had one scoring rider, so the correlation of riders selected to scores is fairly obvious. Expect AG to be at or near the top of the daily lists for most of the remaining races, as the only one to have spent big on an Ardennes specialist (Gilbert): behind her, the three teams who have already done well through Felline get another boost, especially Scrool07 who also has Devenyns. Devenyns was popular enough to have been included in the Combined Wisdom team, and apart from Scrool, Trudgin, DJSprtsch and yours truly also managed to combine him with another scorer.

Standings
The reason the top teams are there is that they picked well for a different type of race than today's. That means many of them did not score today. Five of the top ten, including the top 2, scored nothing today, allowing Search to close the gap to second to just 2 points, and DJW in 4th also draws a little closer. A one place step up from 10th by Rote Laterne is the only actual change in the top ten. AG moves off the bottom step, but no other moves were more than 2 places.

Felline has been one of the most consistent scorers in the game: he is now in profit, which is a notable acheivement as we are comparing a few races with a whole season score, and this has been the 8th race in which he has gained points.

The 5 pointers included Henao and Roelandts, who are each on ten teams, and Theuns, who is on eight.

Scores on the day
All 8 teams that had Gasparotto had at least one five pointer: Akuryo had 2, and JosephD had 3, but Murrjt had Gasparotto, 3 fivers, and Tsatevitch to top the day's standings.

Nocentini moves Search above Asdfgh101 into second place: DJW's Felline was the only other non-five pointer among the cobble orientated top ten sides. Search's step up was the only change in the top ten. Murrjt moves up 6 places, but is still outside the top half. No-one else moved more than three spots. Like I said, anticlimactic.

13 of the 5 pointers were chosen, of whom Simon Yates (4 teams) is the most popular.

Scoring teams

The ten Henao teams are the top ten on the day: Italian Gigolo combined him with Hivert, while La Velocipede, Murrjt and Joseph D link Henao and Gasparotto. A couple of fivers put the last named in pole position.

Rankings
Nocentini closes the gap on Geraint for Search a little further, but the lead still looks likely to survive all the way to Ans. No positional change in the top ten, although Joseph D moves up 2 spots just outside it. At the other end, for those interested in the wooden spoon, AG's Gilbert-based tactic intended to provide a late acceleration has rather come off the rails, and she slips back to last.

Team scores today
The top ten, the teams with Henao, are the same as they were on Wednesday. The order of course depends on with whom he was paired: Murrjt, Joseph D and La Velocipede all had Gasparotto, but Vanendert outscores three fivers, or no other scorers, for the daily win. The sole team with Meitjes was Not My Circus, but those of us who had fivers to back up Nordhaug eclipsed that score.

FINAL OVERALL
With an outstanding set of cobbled results never looked like being pegged back, Geraint Too Fast got away with only reaping 10 points from the Ardennes series (in which I include Brabaantse Pijl, while acknowledging the geographical inaccuracy, because it is essentially the same genre). Nocentini never threatened the surprise result today that might have seen Search run him close. Henao's earlier than predicted recovery raised the three members of the previous top ten who had trusted his powers of recuperation one further place each today, to 5th, 6th and 7th, while two other Henaoists, Joseph D and Del1962, knock Rote Laterne out of the final top ten.

Well done to Geraint TooFast, hard luck to those who ran him close, my gratitude to the handful of teams that kept me away from last place, and thanks to everyone for having a go.

I'll try to post some rider data analysis, but I don't see myself having time before Tuesday evening for that.

Keep you eyes peeled: Giro game to follow soon.

Congratulations GeraintTooFast, thanks for the game Armchair cyclist. Although I would have preferred to stay in the top 10 I'm satisfied with my result. I did better than last year. Looking forward to the Giro?

Firstly thanks to Armchair cyclist for running the game (and others), you along with the others who run cq games add a bit of fun while watching cycling

Secondly congrats to GeraintTooFast for winning

Thirdly in the light of Boonen's injury I am pleased to scrape into the top ten, but without his ill luck it could have been so much different

And finally I wonder if one of Degenkolb, Kristoff or Van Avermaet could have made a winning team, they are all expensive I know but they alll had pretty strong returns.

yeah, thanks AC, and congratulations to GeraintTooFast.

with a 5th place from Nocentini in the final race being enough to snatch away the win, I obviously was hoping for that to happen (although it wasn't too likely to begin with of course) - but in the end I can be satisfied with 2nd I think.

Let's go for the longest streak of races without a single point. Three gone so far, let's see if I can continue this.

You managed it, but you'll have to share that record with Capt Cavman.

It's something!

Thanks for hosting the game. I think I'll have to do my very best in the Giro to get high up in the overall leaderboard of 2015 smaller cq games this year!

Congratulations GTF, with this convincing victory.

The most likely scenario for me to fail is if Boonen has a bad classics season and Stybar has an awesome one, but I feel like Boonen is focused and determine to do great, which is a good sign.

Couldn' I just keep my mouth shut... (This is from a post I made right after deadline). A 500 point difference for this choice, feels extra sad now that it turned out like this. Would've gotten me in a 13th place only, so really congratulations to all of the people high up in the classification, this was a though edition I guess.

Review of My Team

Return 161 - definately justified his selection

MOSER Moreno(87)

Return - 5 Very dissapointing

GAUDIN Damien(66)

Return 15 - again dissapointing though less so than Moser

KING Edward(25)

Return 5 - dissapointing though less so than Moser

TURGIS ANTHONY(20)

Return 0 - only rode LBL.

DOMBROWSKI Joseph Lloyd(10)
