The reason you atttack on the descent is not to gain time but to put pressure on your opponents. Don't give him time to rest, eat, drink. See Pereiro and Arroyo going full gas on the descents towards La Toussuire or Contadors attack on the Sarenne descent.
this guy understands it

Curiosity got the best of me and decided to peek in earlier, pleased to see Coquard in the break showing some nice legs.

What the hell is van Marcke doing in the mountains? Who does he think he is, Geraint Thomas?

He's beating Sky's cavalry , with Kwia and Preidler, at the moment.

Sorry if someone made the point before but why do Giant have Priedler in the break rather than looking after a clearly struggling Barguil?

Their aim going into the tour was stage wins. Their aim was never top 10 with Barguil. Barguil himself knows he probably won't top 10. They never had intention of riding GC, so why would they now? He's obviously too badly injured so they are going for stage wins like they planned.

Preidler has collected 13 KOM points today so far. He should get another 10 at the top of this. He'll need to come 4th or higher to get more than the 50 points the winner of the stage will get. Froome will still be holding the jersey with 57, but Porte who is wearing it has only 40.

Priedler is an outside shot to win the stage. He'll outclimb these two on the final climb. Question is, will others behind him outclimb him?

I didn't even mean to protect his GC position, just out of humanitarian concern for Barguil.

There's other riders for that and their team won't be able to help him much anyway.

Thats all very well but it means that the attacking rider doesnt get the chance to eat drink and rest either so wheres the advantage?!

I still remember BMC riding their asses off on the crosswind stage in 2013 to limit the losses for Evans.
