Indeed, or to let Moreno just ride full gas to remain in striking distance. But Moreno, as often, plays a dubious role in the final.

Yet Purito still finished ahead of him, which means Purito was stronger.

Top notch ride by Dumoulin.

In that case it was a fail by Purito; he should have attacked earlier and he could have won the stage. If he was looking at Valverde to attack first that was pretty stupid considering that Quintana was up the road.

Looks to me like Quintana is here as a domestique to Valverde. No way he would have been sent up the road so early in the race if he was leader. Unfortunately for Bala, non of the other favourites had the power to close Nairo down.

Very strange finish. Great win by Chaves and Dumoulin really impressed. Martin just missing the bus again. At least I got that right

You can't make any predictions from this. Only a handful of seconds between JRod, Nairo, Froome and Bala in the end. Only Katusha really had an incentive to chase, since Roche was up the road. So I would guess that Froome is the happiest of the traditional GC favourites.

If he attacks earlier, Bala has got the chance to come back. It's all about timing and measuring your efforts. You have to know that.

The only fault by Katusha is not letting Dani Moreno be up there in the Chaves group. But it's normal that there's a little of doubt between the big guys on the first day of a GT, concerning the legs.

so things are pretty clear for Sky now, Froome is the sole leader with Roche free wolf to make his own GC.

After this stage i think Vuelta is between Purito, Valverde and Froome. With 39km ITT i think Froome is the favorite now.

Not sure why some here are so surprised about how the finale panned out. This is exactly what happened in 2013 in the 2nd stage when Purito and Valverde were not willing to do an effort longer than 500m so a 2nd tier guy took the win.

Chaves' 2 year deal with OGE finishes end of 2015. His TT is such that it's unlikely he'll ever make a serious GC contender for GT but he has proven a capacity to win at WT level & now GT stage.

Whilst he has seemed to have gelled very well with the overall team atmosphere & vibe; it will be interesting to see whether he may look elsewhere. Today's result certainly wouldn't do him any harm either way. In many ways, he MAY be best served staying where he is but who knows ?

I'm not saying it's not a wasted chance. If you mean it's a poor showing in terms of tactics, then yes. But based on form, they both showed good form. Especially Purito.
