I don't believe Valverde is saving himself. I think he's just not as good as in the Tour.

If Purito really goes full *** on that 2 km section, he's gone. Will it be enough to hold on? Perhaps, let's hope.

Otherwise Dan Martin or Dumoulin ftw.

Remember Valverde on Huy in the Tour...yeah me neither, because he sucked (for his standards). Then he goes on to have the best Tour of his life. So don't count him out for this Vuelta. He will be up there with the best, battling for the overall victory and maybe even tomorrow for the stage. Of course I think the same for Purito. I think he is good enough to battle at least for a spot on the podium.

Valverde did a different approach to the Tour than the past years, being more off par in the Dauphiné then usual, and gradually improving during the Tour.

In the Vuelta, it's all about maintaing your form till the end. I don't believe he will peak again for a 3rd week in a Vuelta, after he peaked for the 3rd week in the Tour.

If he does it, it's really suspicious.

This seems like it could be a very interesting finish and very hard to predict. Expect some movement on the steep bits at 5 to go, some re-grouping over the top, and a select group contesting the final, with corners figuring in. Could be a classic. OGE will have some motivation to keep the jersey and have some guns for the final.

Judging from stage 2, Chaves has a good chance of keeping red. Maybe even winning. A lot depends on how fresh Valverde, Martin, Purito, Froome and Quintana are following the TdF. They will probably only race each other for the win. Sagan is a chance if it's not raced too hard, normally I'd say Gerrans but his form is unknown.

Dumoulin maybe, Impey, LL Sanchez, Visconti also come to mind

It's a pretty daft stage - typically Vuelta

200 km absolutely flat. Nothing to break up the peloton. Downhill run-in into traffic islands and a tight turn onto the climb which is very soon 15-20%. Everyone knows you need a good position before that and there is no 3 km rule today so it's just asking for a pileup. Much more dangerous than the stage they neutralized. Then on the climb you could end up with big leadout guys at the front coming to a virtual standstill and clogging up the road either accidentally or by design

Well Chaves has a red jersey to keep, but this looks like Purito and Bala territory. I'll go with those 3 for the podium this stage.

I reckon the forum would melt down if the stage was won by a certain wheelsucking teammate of the current red jersey wearer.

I guess it will depend if he wheelsucks his way to the win :)
