14 with 5 riders left.

SemirS, you are the highest placed among those with 4 riders left.
Del1962(4th) is the highest placed with 5 riders left.

and I with all 9 riders am placed 14th :p:p

Withdrawals have had some impact on the teams: 14 of the 31 riders that are out were selected, but that includes 6 of the most popular 11 picks.
Peraud (33 teams)
Landa (28)
Ruffoni (23)
Pelucchi (18)
Kittel (16)
Niemiec (15)
Hesjedal (9)
Viviani (6)
Geniez (4)
Van Poppel (3)
Agnoli (3)
Fraile (2)
Ewan (2)
Berlato (1)

The impact is not always dire, however. Ruffoni, Berlato, Van Poppel and Agnoi were 50 points of each, and not necessarily included with any expectation of much return beyond the 15 points for finishing, and with an average spend of 388 points/rider, Peraud. Pelucchi and Niemiec were less than half a rider each in price, Fraile a bit more expensive. Not all of the DNFs have been a total let down either: Kittel had gained a respectable 168 guaranteed points for his teams which are not lost, and Ruffoni's points/investment return of 92% will not be beaten by very many riders. Ewan (62 points) and Viviani (41) at least made some contributions to their teams, but will be seen as expensive flops, as will Hesjedal and Geniez. But it is Landa's 28 teams that will suffer most: the 3 point return on a spend of 1102 points is no compensation at all.

Within the same category, sorted by game standing (Projected points)
9 riders remaining: Murali (14th)
8 riders: Comodoro (9th), Caruut
7 riders: GPBlanco (2nd), BicycleBoy, 18Valve, Kabete, NairoQ, TomJelte, Vladimir, Barmaher, Mellow_Velo, Jancouver, Trudgin
6 riders: LightBing (1st), BluesInTheBottle, AmisVelo, Postmanhat, Rote_Laterne, Yellow_Knight, Capt_Cavman, Not_My_Circus, Scrool07, Torcia86, Hakkie2, Kazistuta, JustSomeGuy, Bbass, Shalgo, JosephD
5 riders: Del1962 (4th), DJW, Minessa, Crevaison, GeraintTooFast, Armchair_Cyclist, Tigerion, Carlo_Algatrensig, ArchieBoy, Hugo87, Joelsim, Fauniera, Murrjt, Josedin
4 riders: SemirS (8th), LosBrolin, Search, Laarsland, PremierAndrew, Leadbelly, GodChild and Collective Wisdom.

18Valve, Kabete, DJW and SemirS hold onto places 5-8 despite having lost Landa: Loss of Viviani does stop Bicycle Boy from holding 3rd, and Geniez's failure has not stopped Del1962 from being 4th. And Kittel's DNF doesn't avoid LightBing from being in the lead.

Standings

The top two teams swap places, as did those in 4th and 5th. Bigger rises are seen by Los Brolin (16th to 10th) and Caruut (19th to 11th), but B'bass recovers fom the steep fall I observed yesterday and rises 17 places.

thank you AC. i think your analysis has highlighted the crucial aspect of game: returns matter, not whether your team completes or not.

But if your pick is a GC contender, or a cheap pick looking for top 15 GC, then finishing is essential to getting the points. If you have picked a sprinter/breakaway specialist/TTer who might hold the leader's jersey for several days before the mountains, then the 15 points for reaching the end of three weeks can be fairly incidental. But they might miss out on week 3 stages that would suit them.

Perhaps a crafty pick would have been a cheap sprinter who can hang around to place well in week three sprints after most sprinters have gone home. We'll see soon if anyone found one.

Porsev? He finished 2nd, 2nd, 4th and 2nd in all flat stages when we scratch out those that abandoned. He'll surely be worth his price (84p), if he repeats these results 1 or 2 times later on. Only 5 picked him.

Rest Day 3 What remains to come?

How much earning potential/ vulnerability do the teams near the top of the table have? These games have typically approached the end with a few teams with similar main scorers at the top of the table, differentiated by their budget/long-shot selections. Not so this time: there are a variety of tactics that have placed teams high in the rankings.

GP Blanco 1st (1362 pts)
KRUIJSWIJK Steven 656 Can't gain GC points, could lose 125 if he falls to 2nd, or 185 if to third. In position for up to 90 pink jersey points, probably more bothered about finishing close than getting high stage finish points
MAJKA Rafal 256
ZAKARIN Ilnur 256 Any GC change likely to be swings and roundabouts cancelling each other out, though either or both might overhaul Valverde for 25 points, a couple of dozen stage points each are very probable, but they haven't looked like stage winners for week 3.

Potential for breakaway/sprint with few remaining sprinters points, nothing to rely on though
PIRAZZI Stefano 96 more likely to fall than rise in GC at about 6 points per place
BATTAGLIN Enrico 51
KUDUS GHEBREMEDHIN Merhawi 22
DE MARCHI Alessandro 25

Out of the race
PELUCCHI Matteo 0
PERAUD Jean-Christophe 0

LightBing 2nd @ 63 pts

KRUIJSWIJK Steven 656 see GPBlanco above
ZAKARIN Ilnur 256 If he overtakes Majka in GC, that is a 25 point swing to LightBing compared to GPB, otherwise see above
URAN URAN Rigoberto 120 Surely won't lose 8 mins + to drop in GC, some recovery could see him overtake those less than a minute ahead of him, to gain 8, 23, 38 or even 53 GC points. Unlikely to get more stage points than Majka or Zakarin.

PORSEV Alexander 47 There are so few sprinters left that less than a couple of top 5s would be disappointing: at least 25pts more to be hoped for

Potential for breakaway points, nothing to rely on though
OSS Daniel 25
KADRI Blel 15

Out of the race
KITTEL Marcel 168
RUFFONI Nicola 12
PELUCCHI Matteo 0

Bicycle Boy 3rd @ 167 points

KRUIJSWIJK Steven 656 (see comments under GPBlanco above)
JUNGELS Bob 275 Recovered some GP placings yesterday, but more likely to slide than to rise further again: back to 12th would be -53 GC points
URAN URAN Rigoberto 120 See under LightBing above
FIRSANOV Sergey 55 Minor GC fluctuation likely, but yesterday will probably have been his most prominent scoring

Very slight potential for breakaway/sprint with few remaining sprinters points
BUSATO Matteo 18
KOLOBNEV Alexandr 15

ERSHOV Artur 15 Should have been eliminated as out of time yesterday, but not so reported in results: 15 points to lose?

Out of the race
VIVIANI Elia 41
NIEMIEC Przemyslaw 0

18Valve 4th @ 182 pts

KRUIJSWIJK Steven 656
NIBALI Vincenzo 357 So two shots at the remaining 90 pink points, but if Astana can engineer Nibali into the lead, that is a 185 point gain that essentially wipes out the deficit to GPBlanco

Slight breakaway possibilities
FOLIFOROV Alexander 92 (will probably lose his 7 points for Blue Jersey 6th place, but a decent return even without that)
KADRI Blel 15 (also on LightBing's team)
SEROV Alexander 15
RODRIGUEZ MARTIN Cristian 15
KOLOBNEV Alexandr 15

Out of the race
RUFFONI Nicola 12
LANDA MEANA Mikel 3 (terrific to be in contention having suffered that loss)

Del1962 5th @ 247 pts
KRUIJSWIJK Steven 656
POZZOVIVO Domenico 129 (Del would need him to be given unlikely freedom to escape so that he wins a stage by 5 minutes to be in a position to win, but a disastrous day for Uran, Majka or Zakarin could get him near the podium)
URAN URAN Rigoberto 120
BETANCUR GOMEZ Carlos Alberto 15
KOLOBNEV Alexandr 15

Out of the race
KITTEL Marcel 168
RUFFONI Nicola 12
GENIEZ Alexandre 0
PERAUD Jean-Christophe 0

Caruut 11th @ 510 points
If Chaves overtakes Kruijswijk, that is a 250 point swing to Caruut over most of the teams above him: if he does it soon there could be 90 pink jersey points as well. It would also need some great stage results to win, but he has more potential than the other Chaves team, Postmanhat

CHAVES RUBIO Jhoan Esteban 463
POZZOVIVO Domenico 129
PIRAZZI Stefano 96
FIRSANOV Sergey 55
BATTAGLIN Enrico 51
DE MARCHI Alessandro 25
BUSATO Matteo 18
BOLE Grega 15

Out of the race
NIEMIEC Przemyslaw 0

Postmanhat 13th @ 531pts

Not as much earning potential as Caruut, but if Chaves is a possible for the win, this is a possible podium contender

CHAVES RUBIO Jhoan Esteban 463
ATAPUMA HURTADO Jhon Darwin 155
PIRAZZI Stefano 96
MONFORT Maxime 84
BELKOV Maxim 15
KOSHEVOY Ilia 15

So, the KRUIJSWIJK-ites are going to fill the top-10...

Nibali-ites are in for a rude shock!

Pozzo can climb at most 2 spots, not more than that :(

Zaka might gain one more spot.

basically, i am never going to return to top-10 now.

none with a Kruijswijk-chaves-zakarin combo?

The two with Chaves have neither Kruijswijk nor Zakarin.

GPBlanco, Lightbing have Kruijswijk & Zakarin though, the former in combination with Majka, the latter with Uran. Not surprisingly the top two at the moment ;) GPBlanco seems to have this one covered, barring any unforeseen problems with Kruijswijk.

Standings
Despite Jungels' good performance, Blues in the Bottle yields a place leaving the top 9 teams as the 9 teams with Kruijswijk. A poor day for Majka and Pirazzi are the main reasons that GPBlanco's lead is now down to less than a third place.

Projected points
Highest change in GC is Kovetchov overtaking Anton for 30th: Oss presumably took intermediate sprint points (I haven't seen any highlights yet), because he has moved from 7th to third in the red jersey standings.

Rider point changes: I don't normally show variations of less than 10 or 15 points, but there areso few, here are all the changes of riders selected for the game

Standings
Oss's intermediate points have a real significance: the lift LightBing into a slender lead.

Not really worth posting the full list, but Comodoro swaps with B'bass for 17th, Search and Mezgec affected Scrool07 exchange 24th and 25th places, Geraint gets to share 31st and Just Some Guy no longer shares 45th. Everyone else is exactly where they were yesterday

I'm confident Oss will win a stage. That's why I choose him, like Polanc in last year game. Win or lose, I'm pretty happy to be competing for the win. This after forgetting to sign up for the classics game.
I guess I'm out of contention for the 4 games overall classification, unless I win all three that are left. :p

A big thanks to Armchair cyclist for organizing the games!

Stage 18 Cobbled hills

Guaranteed Points

As far as the game is concerned, they might almost have cancelled the stage: only one of the top ten was picked, and he was only on two teams, and down in 7th place

The most significant change is Oss slipping one place in the points classification, losing 10 points for our leader. But Lightbing also has Uran, and Fuglsang's separation from the GC group today means Uran rises 1 spot, and 8 projected points, to hang on with a halved lead.

Stage 19 French fracas
Sorry about the late posting: I had seen headlines that made me want to watch the stage properly before I looked at full results, but a domestic plumbing disaster last night meant that I couldn't until this morning.

After a couple of days that were effectively neutralised as far as the game is concerned, this will be different.

Even bigger, but less significant, rises than Tom-Jelte noted above for Just Some Guy (13 places), Geraint TooFast (14), Hugo87 (15), your host (16) and Rote Laterne (17): falls of 15-20 spots for Murali, Minessa, Crevaison, B'bass, Mellow Velo, Yellow Knight and Trudgin.

Our so called Collective Wisdom team has only 2 remaining riders: Uran and Kolobnev, but keeping them off the bottom is poor Leadbelly, whose three non-finishers yesterday leave him with just one rider to root for, which is another reason to hope that Adam Hansen can manage to finish his 14th consecutive GT.

Probably not worth posting, but this means I can still win if Kruijswijk DNF, Nibali wins and Majka drops some places miraculously?

Long shot :D

Seems like 18-Valve is a worthy winner: the only one that had the insight to fit Nibali, Landa and Kruijswijk in his team. Including a good Foliforov that seems a real worthy team of winning this year's edition. Wonder how close it is.

The overnight leader drops to fourth, and 18Valve, only 3 points behind yesterday, takes the top step. Comodoro moves from 6th to virtual second, while NairoQ makes a last minute leap from 15th to the podium. Also making a late surge into the top ten are AmisVelo, Search and Geraint TooFast. GP winner-elect, LightBing, dropped from third to ninth, while Caruut, a potential podium occupant under one of the scenarios I drafted above, had a twelve place tumble to 20th.
