You could say the exact same thing about a guy like Vervaeke, who was behind him in l'Avenir. Foliforov was second in two mountain stages at l'Avenir which weren't won from a break, which is a good sign for his cllimbing abilities. Slagter was 5th just before Michael Matthews in the last climbing stage at l'Avenir for example... I am not too amazed that some guys need some more time to get going.

He was 12th on friday, not too shabby huh?

He finished in the same group as all the favorites on stage 13. In a group of only 14 riders. That's not nothing. And the Avenir-result is not a one-off. He has a lot of great results in mountain stages and time trials from 2014 and some from 2015 as well. His best time trials have contained climbing, so it's not exactly from nowhere, although it is definitely another level and surprising.

He was interviewed by RAI just before the start and said he was not going all out.
Which tells me the top riders will ride much faster than this.
