why didn't they send 1-2 doms into the initial break?
That's a good question. Same issue with Giant at the Vuelta last year, but apparently Lotto wasn't watching.

If Kruijswijk doesn't lose a huge chunk of time over the flat section he's an absolute freak.

This is brutal, but Stefano is losing the Giro because of having no team :(
His poor descending skills are a bigger factor.

But now he will kill himself in the flat and he will still lose lots of time because he's alone, whereas Chaves, Valverde and Nibali all have teammates to help him.

Of course, he's only put in this position because of his descending skills. But this position wouldn't be so bad with a team.

I don't get people saying 'bad bike handlers.' These are top, top professionals. Of course their bike handling skills are good. Some are better than others, obviously, but compared to us on these boards, no comparison. The conditions, the pressure, the tiredness, the technical descent, visibility...These guys are all going all out, fighting for top spots on the GC. There was always gonna be a chance for some crashes, unfortunate as it is, but simply saying 'bike handling skills need improvement,' is rubbish.

This is by far the worst nightmare for any leader in the last week. Alone in a valley.

Looks like more than 2 min and half... it's a lot more.
Kind of make sense, harsh.
Chavito for picking I guess.
