Agree, we have almost a week until the next decent mountain stage, although there is the weekends TT of course.

I wouldn't underestimate the stage after the rest day, if a team wants to make the race hard from the start it could be really hard.

There are literally three posts congratulating him for his victory.

Having been safe in the knowledge since 30k to go, that Wellens was gonna win this, it's just the heat of the moment and drama amongst the GC riders that people talk about. Nothing wrong about that.

Your take too much conclusions for a forst day... Nibali attacked.... landa came from the flat and he is been a little afected by polen. Today is not the best climb for him as well.

But of course the Giro has lot of contenders, and it is early to put them appart:

Nibali, Landa, Valverde, Dumoulin, Urán, Zakarin, Pozzovivo, Fulgsang, Hesjedal, Majka, Kruijswick,....all of them are great riders and can win the Giro. Luck will play a role for sure, but day by day we will see wich ones are the best in these 3 weeks in all kind of stages.

You blame Nibali and Landa, but astana was the team who more tried something today and Nieve with Landa at his wheel were who caught Nibali attack...

Nibali tried just in case people look each others, but it wanst the case...

Dumoulin showed last Vuelta wich kind of rider he is...He must improve, he is young...he could lose a lot in a big queen stage, an more becoue this is an olimpic year and he go for the ITT, but till that moment he will be the boss of the race...he is an amazing rider.

It's just bizarre.

How can a three time GT winner who achieved a dominant level in July 2014 be unable to replicate that level for 2 years? He isn't old, he can't possibly have forgotten how to train.

And even though Froome and Contador crashed out and Quintana wasn't there, Nibali's performance in that Tour was utterly dominant.

Now he's getting beat by a lot of riders.

We shouldn't ride him off yet but that was a worrying sign.

Despite the fact he's a great champion with a big palmares, you always get the idea he's beatable in the mountains. He's not a constantly dominant figure like Contador or Froome. He's a great allround rider, but he's has his off days uphill.

Not always. In 2014, he really was climbing supremely well. It's now starting to look like this was an aberration, rather than Nibali having reached a new level he'll be able to get close to again and again in future years. And that, given his age, is puzzling.

Agree, we have almost a week until the next decent mountain stage, although there is the weekends TT of course.

Yeah we have to wait almost a week but still of the next 4 stages 3 could cause some very serious gaps in the gc. A gravel stage can always cause carnage, the ITT will cause time gaps anyway and stage 10 also is very hard and especially since some riders weren't very strong today others might try to make the race es hard as possible.

I'm not expecting wonders from Valv in this race, despite the team hyping it up with #balarosa and all that. Maybe he gets on the podium, if he's lucky. Maybe. I expect him to ride very conservatively here. In Italy.

This giro looks like vuelta 2015, no world class climbers ( quintana is world class but he was far from best shape). Landa is so weak and he has to gain time in the mountains, not loosing... nibali only won the tour because contador fall and that is clear.

I'm not expecting wonders from Valv in this race, despite the team hyping it up with #balarosa and all that. Maybe he gets on the podium, if he's lucky. Maybe. I expect him to ride very conservatively here. In Italy.

There is actually no reason to expect him to ride conservatively in Italy since Italy doesn't differ from other countries in terms of how difficult it is not to ride conservatively.
