Some people already said it a couple of years ago: with his riding style, Tony will not last for 5 more years.

Why?

The knees. You can't produce the same power for a long period of time with such a heavy cadence. The riding style of someone like Dumoulin is more sustainable.

FYI, Froome hasn't crushed it on a time trial since the 2013 Tour. He lost time in the 2014 Vuelta and didn't gain much in the 2015 Tour. He crashed out in the 2014 Tour and 2015 Vuelta before reaching the time trials.

This will probably change today but we're all expecting him to do something he hasn't done in 3 full years.

It looks like Tony Martin is finished as a top time trialist. So that means he's no better than a mediocre domestique now...

Ironically, when he first came up he was considered a future GC rider, and his time trialing was good but not great. Go figure...

All these examples come with caveats. Was he in top form at Vuelta 2014? We don't know. He didn't bother with training on the TT bike in 2015 he says. This year he has been talking up his work and the Rio TT as a goal so I expect him to go very well

this is very true.

however, he is targeting the olympics TT.

may also be why he is a little less explosive in the mountains.

he stopped training the ITT last year because there basically was none.

i read somewhere that he has been this year.

we will see... :)

I see. I don't know, I don't think this TT suits him; although he hasn't been as good in flat TT's for a while now tbf.

I think Froome puts 2 minutes on Quintana today, will have over a 2 minute lead at the end of the day, maybe 3.

Tour will be effectively over as a contest after today.

Agree. To bad that Contador crashed since afterall thats the duel everybody wanted and deserved. Now were left to not knowing and a rather boring tour with no challengers. Add to it all the controversials that has accured its not looking very good!

All indications were that it would have been a blowout in Froome's favour, not a duel.

But I know that many Contador fans have great powers of imagination, and so the 2016 Tour will no doubt be second only to the 2014 Tour when it comes to Contador's Greatest Counterfactual Performances.

Just to be fair, this dude trolls Contador fans as much as they do Froome fans. He has been quiet about the "two contender" tour since yesterday.

Because the winds might ease up a bit at 5 PM.
Because he closed the gap to Sagan and Bodnar alone (he clearly has the form to roll on the flats).
Because he has spent more time in the Tunnel this spring (compared to last year at least).

And Luke Rowe just told ITV that Froome has been over this course twice in training.

No better than the Rolls Royce of flat domestiques you mean. If Boonen hadn't got boxed in on the sprint in this year's Paris-Roubaix, Tony Martin would have been the main reason he won.

On a time trial like this, how do they manage liquid intake? I find in hot conditions even over-hydrating before the start, I get really thirsty by 35 minutes.

Yep i know, Sky seemed to fall behind in the technology race.

But at this race, they have new bike (Which helped landa a lot at the giro), new skin suit and new helmet.
Also Froome did win 2 TTs in 2014, Romandie and Dauphine where he beat the best in the world. (vuelta he was out of form at time of the TT)

Also worth noting Froome said he had worked on TT a lot more this year as there is a TT in the tour and Olympics.
He said that in 2015 he barely spent time riding on his TT bike as it was useless for his tour prep.

But never the less, I expect him to not take as much time on Quintana as in 14 where he took 4 mins.
But u don't loose the ability to TT

I think he'll be close to Dumoulin and will take over a minute on Quintana. (the wind will hurt Nairo more)

That sounds an awful lot like the sort of statement that isn't supported by any kind of objective evidence base whatsoever...
