He didn't really start that badly, he just lost 3'22" to Froome in the TT. Add in the descent and the echelons and he lost about a minute and a half in the climbs.

Aru's problem is that he's a very bad time trialist for a GC rider. Nothing to do with form.

There's no reason to think that he could have podiumed based on his later performances either. He hasn't been among the very strongest on any mountain stage and he's always going to ship time on flat or flattish TTs.
