The first Sunday crit is a separate race and not a stage of the TDU.

Correct and I was referring and predicting the winner of today's stage #1.

BTW while exciting for the fans, I'm not even sure why they have that Sunday crit race since it does not count for anything and the risk of getting hurt for no reason is beyond my understanding. IMO the teams should refuse to race the meaningless crit. JMHO

McEwen is good in the little "tactical" spots, where he's asked to explain how some element of the sport works tactically to people who don't know what's going on. More races should do this.
P&P doing this? FFS

McEwen is on this same broadcast as well? Because if not, I can't deal with those two.

Agree on McEwen. His contributions are welcome.

Before he used to join the two boys only for the final kms. Thankfully nowadays he's there for the entirety of the stage. I couldn't listen to the other two together for the whole week.

The spot I saw involved McEwen and some burlier Australian guy, not P&P. For most of the programme he's on with P&P. He is pretty good. They obviously, are, well, themselves.

The burley bloke is a Channel 9 sports commentator/reporter more known for his work on rugby league. He's not a particularly knowledgeable cycling guy and doesn't portray himself as one but he's a familiar face to the many cycling ignorant channel 9 sports watchers and it's a good thing that it's getting exposure to watchers that otherwise may not have ever bothered to flip over to SBS.

Funnily enough though his name is Phil Gilbert, and he has met his namesake IIRC.

He was useful - he competently, and obviously deliberately, played the "voice of the ignorant", prompting McEwen to go back to first principles. (Rule of thumb: Any explanation of cycling tactics that doesn't use the word SLIPSTREAM assumes too much for first time or very occasional viewers)

Why? They averaged 51kmh for this, with no incidents, so obviously the riders don't see it as unsafe. If they were really worried, they could have a gentleman's agreement to race it 5-6 kmh slower and most of the crowd wouldn't be any the wiser.

I think the winner also gets a decent prize purse, enough to bother racing hard for. IIRC they've only had a couple of crashes for as long as the opening crit has been running.

Sometimes I also think people forget how big Australia is at times... here are a couple of true size maps overlaying France onto south easterm Australia:

Awesome. Proving once again that the TdF is just a $hit small race. :p

Seriously though, does anyone even care about the TDU?

I saw the live link on the CN homepage, and came here to take a look at the race profile. But if the only thread designated to this race doesn't even include stage profiles, then maybe I'm not alone in my nonchalance and utter disinterest?

I'm interested because it's been a while since I've watched a bike race and because it's hard to get English commentary for cyclo cross and because it's hard to watch San Luis live.

agreed. Plus, I guess I never think about caring about profiles because of what Libertine said about the stages being the same every year. Like, if you've followed cycling for awhile you should know that the Stirling stage is just the right kind of unpredictable uphill sprint, Corkscrew is the Poggio of that stage and Willunga is Willunga, and the rest is sprinting. But I suppose the profiles would be useful to newcomers, for sure.

Either way, of course I'm more excited about the geography of San Luis, but in terms of a top level race to follow on TV, it's been awhile so it's definitely worth a watch for me.
