A nice stage win hopefully.
I think that at this point he should still have the overall win as his main priority and not go for stage wins.

Tinkoff should save at least one domestique to help Contador positioning.
Movi and Sky will easily occupy the front of peloton when the time comes.

Maybe unblock Alberto's legs after rest day, by making this stage harder even if it's flat before Peña Cabarga... stage win is possible, if he can create gaps why not, GC is the main goal in his mind.

He probaly knows Movistar and Sky are too strong for a complete turnaround.

Reduce energy from the rest of the peloton before the base of Pena... Maybe it could be good for Bertie.

No, don't make it more complicated for yourself. They are simply catching the break.

Bennati still there.

Contador wants to be in the red before starting the climb, so he doesn't blow up attacking or following a move.

Making sure the break does not win the stage :)
I think it's a smart play by them, and one that I hadn't though about. To start off, he's very unlikely to get 3 minutes on Quintana, so they won't have to control the next few days, hence spending their legs today won't cost them much. And if Contador can't start winning time soon, his odds will start going from slim to minimal. So they might as well put some bonus seconds and a stage win on the table. If he can pull it off, at least it would be a good psychological blow and a nice result. And it could be the start of a mythical comeback. On the flip side, at worst (edit: in terms of a direct result of going for it), he falls from 5th to 7th or whatever.

At first glance, the stage profile suggests a flat run-in to the climb of Pena Cabarga, but on closer inspection, the road is made up of false flats, and little undulations. The Vuelta road book estimates that there is a total altitude gain of 2,500 metres on the stage, so there should be some heavy legs in the bunch come the final climb

It will be mano y mano on the last climb anyway, so I don't really buy that argument.

Glad the break is being caught so we can focus on the GC battle. Nothing worse than missing some key attacks because the broadcasters show the 10th and 11th place riders from the break crossing the line.

Good for spectators.

probably a bluff. Maybe Contador wasn't feeling well.
Not sure about that. You'd surely want the break to stay away in that case and sweep up all the bonus seconds.

He's already so far down and has shown so much weakness bluffing wouldn't be very effective.
You shouldn't have a bluffing range on this stage
