The good old times are back. Confirmed. Gilbert will ride them all! Omloop, MSR, DdV, E3, De Panne, De Ronde, Roubaix, Amstel and just for the fun: Liege! Woohoo.

He was in **** form in Strade already. I really doubt that it was his race program that caused that.

But he won E3, beating Sagan in the process. You don't do that if you're in bad shape

What beverages goes well with Vlaanderen? I follow some fancy twitter-guys who from time to time are posting a pictures of belgian beer while watching classics and I wanna be that cool too.

This one!

Trappist beers. Westmalle, Rochefort, Orval, Chimay, Westvleteren (if you can get it), Achel and La Trappe.
yep ... and Dubbels taste better than Triples IMO

Agreed

I can't agree about dubbels tasting better than tripels - but more importantly, many of these beers are not from Flanders! Save the Walloon beers, like Orval, Chimay and Rochefort, for Ardennes week.

(Also, don't underrate the secular breweries, which can be just as good although I suppose there's something more peculiarly Belgian about the monastic breweries).

Well, I'd agree regarding dubbels vs tripels... Additional alcohol in triples makes them less rich in flavour, I'd say.
Westmalle is a good example to note the difference.

Sure he wasn't weak, but he actually got dropped by a group of around 9 on the Kwaremont IIRC, and only got back on due to the group of 9 looking at each other, before launching an attack on the flat.

He and Sagan got away from the group on a tarmac climb IIRC.

With the wonderful name of Karnemelkbeekstraat.

But yeah, he did have trouble on the cobbles. It was strange, though, that he won, considering his general showings last year. A little like his Amstel victory in 2015.

I saw an interview with him the day after MSR where he said that the thought of winning all five monuments definitely was one he entertains. But he wants to do Il Lombardia and Liège first and then maybe focus on the cobbles later.

I still don't think that is a reason not to do them now, however, given how much everybody speaks about experience counting for everything in them. Wanting to ride Itzulia as preparation for the Ardennes is quite a better reason and probably the real one.

Karnemelkbeekstraat indeed is a wonderful name. How come they don't use that climb in Flanders? Its lovely.

Also Gilbert apparantly racing Roubaix as well next Sunday makes me root even more for him on Sunday.

On Kwito, targetting Líege and Lombardia beforehand sounds reasonable, but he has won the probably 2 races which requires the closest skillset to do well in Flanders. Winning E-3 and Strade tells me he easily could find himself in the finale and when he is that, he usually finds a way to win.

I agree on the Kwiato part but as I said, I simply think he has chosen to focus on Liège this year after a couple of bad seasons with a very broad focus and his path to that leads through the Basque Country which eliminates any possibility of a participation in De Ronde.

And also, I have to say that I am not convinced he will be able to power up the steepest, cobbled hellingen as emphatically as some of his adversaries due to his lower weight. So I don't think he has a Flanders-victory in him just yet but I would definitely have bet against him before MSR as well, so who I am to say that.

Agreed. LBL is a better race for him. I just don't see him as a great cobbles rider, as versatile as he is. If it was allowed to ride on bike paths instead of cobbles or if the gutter wasn't closed off, RVV would be an ideal race for him. Overtraining, bad form or whatever, he did manage to win E3 last year, but in the finale of RVV he had every opportunity to fight for the win and failed. To me it shows that E3 can be won by a versatile rider, whereas RVV favours the true cobbles specialist.
