It is not sagan fault that he won. In the interwiew he said he thought the race is dead for him 5 km. He did not controlled the race. The other team made him win this.

Sagan has been ill. What do you want him to do? Go long like Wellens and risk it? Nah. Much better to stay invisible and wait for the sprint. Hate the game, not the player. Calling him a wheelsucker is just ridiculous. He's not Leipheimer or Gerrans FFS.

No your right, he is a meintjes ;)

It's also what you get when the WC are designed for sprinters who can climb a bit for three years in a row. ...
Doha was had no hills. But otherwise yeah, the WCRR last few years was "classic" style race.

But Belgians, et all doing all of nothing today had something to do with it. Sagan won of luck today, he had one card and played that card well. But that Ala will be caught was anything but certain.
Sure, Sagan got it spot on and it's a great win for him. Personally I think it's a shame that the podium for the biggest race in cycling has been made up for three years in a row now, by guys who were virtually unseen the entire race until the last 3km. This should be cycling's showpiece event - but it's been way more tedious than most monuments for four years now because of crap courses.

So at least the Gaviria hype train derailed today.

Much harder than a Giro flat stage.

Didn't help that for some weird reason he tried an attack earlier.
He needs more miles and experience in his legs.

Having said that it was a good sign that he was in the leading group at the end after his injuries late in the year.

And I don't see any hype train being derailed. Not yet.

Well next year we will get a completely new world champion. I cannot imagine Sagan winning on that course

Please, don't compare a attacker like sagan with wheelsuckers like kristoff or matthews.
A sprinter does not a wheelsucker make. By definition. Nough said.

The Sagan hate is hilarious... He's one of the most attacking, exciting riders all year, but by all means keep complaining that he doesn't deserve it.

He's gone from dumb aggressive rider who wastes all his energy too early to Gerrans v2 literally overnight.

Cort... Cort... Cort... what were you doing?
He probably wouldn't have won if he'd waited for the sprint, he might not even have gotten a medal, but a top-10?
We should praise him for doing this.

It was a very fast race and the climb wasn't hard enough.
The bigger problem than the not so hard climb is the huge distance from the climb to the finish. As i have said from the beginning.

Also the Belgian stars were not ready to sacrifice their chances for the team, with the exception of Wellens and Benoot.

I would like to see bala junior winning today but after, he was caught, and the most likeable winner was by far sagan

Surely no-one is saying that Sagan is an undeserving winner. Just that it would have been a lot more fun to see him win the jersey on a more selective course - like RVV or Strade Bianche - than in a bunch sprint for the second year in a row.

I usually cheer for the Colombian riders, but you have to appreciate what Sagan did here. I don't understand the hate towards him. Is it related with something else other than cycling?

Boom, and there is the point. Its good tactics if you like a rider and wheelsucking if you dont.

No, it's wheelsucking either way.

Its also good tactics either way. The people saying how great Sagan was today would be spitting feathers if it was Gerrans who won today.

Gerrans v2?

Wow, talk about sour grapes...

Pretty sure he was mocking the reaction on here. Rightly imo.

In case it wasn't clear, I was referencing the criticism laid on him in this thread (the Gerrans reference isn't my opinion).

The ones calling him a wheelsucker surely are.

That's what anyones says when they think that a rider doesn't deserve to win.

One more thing. What else Sagan should have done? Attack, make the final selection, pull "smart" riders to the line to be outsprinted by these "smart" riders on the line?
Todays win is the result of the negative racing of all "smart" guys whole year.

But he didn't today...?

It's not like Sagan doesn't win other races, I don't see why I should say "oh well, I don't care he didn't do anything today until the final 300m but it's ok as he attacked in Gent-Wevelgem", unless it's a rider who doesn't win anything and they finally deserve a big win (Alaphillipe, for example). Sagan can and has lit up races. Today he didn't, ergo I feel others deserved it more. It really isn't hard to understand. Sagan played to his strengths but I, and others, am still allowed to say I wanted Alaphillipe, Cort, Kiryienka, Bettiol etc to win

Partly yes. At least for some people on the forum. (Looking at you LS)

The site would have crashed for sure. Even Matthews winning would have been a lot worse. Matthews must be sick of looking at Sagan's back wheel by now.
