Re:

I don't fully understand how the photos work at the finish.

For example the bikes of Demare and Izagirre are much longer

and both front wheels more elongated than Wellens and Laporte.

Is the photo actually an amalgamation of many photos?

Fuglsand and Zakarin biggest casualties I think.
Oomen also lost 20 seconds, he didn't fall but got held up.

All other favorites seem ok

But crash was inside 3km
But who would you give them same time as?
I like to know too. Usually everyone came in together(sprint stage) , but today, there are gaps.

Ugh, that was very unlucky for Gorka... never seen him sprint that well.

Jesus Herrada also got held up in the crash, I rider I thought could get a top-5 in this race with the climbing legs he has displayed so far. Fuglsang again messed up P-N.

Why is Wellens not even an option to win the overall here lol?

I have asked that twice already but no reply
Polls only allow 10 options, someone is always going to get left out.

Cyclists like Chaves don't stand much of a chance here (poor time trial for starters).

There is a lot of confusion about finish line photos. Hopefully this can clear things up.

That is not one photo.

Each pixel is one moment in time. The right-most pixel is 1/1000th of a second, the pixel to the left is the 2nd thousandth, etc.

So moving faster, like Wellens was, means you arrive later and leave sooner; your bike will appear shorter.

Looking at the back wheel of Demare and Gorka? doesn't matter, that sliver of the photo was taken thousandths of a second after the front of their wheels already crossed the line. Same with the back of their rear wheel; taken hundredths after the race was already over.

Ahhhh, many thanks. This makes sense.

Yes, it is. It's one-dimensional photos taken exactly at the finish line aligned so as to give a meaningful two-dimensional picture.

The bikes of Wellens and Laporte seem shorter because they passed the line at higher speed.

No doubt, but there's plenty of mountains for him to make up some time.

I don't realistically think that Chaves will be there in the end, but Wellens will be.
