While Longo Borghini was ruthlessly maximizing the chances of an Italian gold, even at the expense of guaranteed silver for herself, I confess that I have no idea at all what AVDB was doing. She wins that match sprint every single time. It was as if Mollema sat on in San Sebastián and then Alaphillipe responded by also sitting up. The Dutch decision making in that race was absolutely bizarre throughout

Yeah, that was truly odd.

As not that big of an expert on women's cycling, I got confused because the Danish commentator kept assuring us that Longo Borghini was much, much faster than van der Breggen. But I thought that was bullcrap and was very confused by her riding.

That was bizare indeed how sure they sounded Borghini was faster, when everyone else would think the opposite. They got saved from a big embarrassment there..

Yeah, but the good Mr Wenzel did begin to talk about van der Breggen letting Borghini do all the work and because of that would stand a bigger chance in the sprint.

So I'm sure that would have been his explanation in the event of a van der Breggen victory.

All in all, they will have to climb almost a hundred small, steep hills in the race. Surely that must make it hard enough.

Really small hills and that's possibly the issue. If they let a break go and roll round for 11-13 laps then the only people getting dropped are probably the pure sprinters and the guys picked because of their nationality who can't hang with the big boys. There's enough there to make a race of it but there are also enough wide flat sections to chew up any lead a break may get.

Weather-wise its currently predicted to be raining off and on all week, so standard Glasgow summer. No point looking at Sunday forecast yet. Wednesday could be interesting with rain more likely around the Lennoxtown part of the course so the men may catch it but the women may not.

If the weather is kind I'll be heading to Strathblane, maybe watch it where they take the sharp right turn, looks a good viewing point

I may head up there too although it's a bit far out for me on a work day. Devil's Elbow is the local nickname, although with closed roads they're rail round it. Might be tricky to get to if they don't let you ride down the 891. You might have to go via Killearn, through Blanefield then work the back way through the Strathblane houses to Milndavie Road.

I'd say Van Baarle will do better than Van Emden.

Van Baarle comfortably beat Van Emden (who was only 4th) in the Dutch NC ITT.
