Chapeau Roglic - looked very good today, Yates looked good, Nibali & Superman better then what I expected, Tommy D slightly disappointing, but there's a long way to go yet.

Will Jumbo defend the jersey tomorrow?

I think Nibali or Dumoulin looks the best, simmering form, ready to build towards 3rd week. Roglic and Yates a bit hot, MAL surprised me, will definitely be a threat now.

Dumoulin looks by no means the best! This is his sort of stage, he was supposed to have the TTs as his advantage, and he loses to Yates, Nibali and López who even beat him on the flat part.

He looks worse than expected and has been bad all spring. I don't think he will get on the podium, honestly.

I really don't get all this. GT riders are supposed to be good for three weeks, and they usually are.

And Simon Yates has clearly been underdoing it so far this season. Surely, he does not look too good right now. Roglic maybe, but Yates; definitely not.

I also think Landa was the biggest disappointment of the day because there were 6 big favourites for the race; 5 of them did top 5 today, Landa was 36. Very bad. Zakarin was even worse, but I didn't have high expectations for him. Sosa was still worse but it really looks like he has no intentions of trying for the GC.

Surprisingly good performances by Majka, De Plus and Mollema, and I really would not have bet on Víctor de la Parte going top 12!

I might be a little optimistic/biased as I'm a fan of the Major, but he's going for the tour as well, and I think he learned something from Froome last year. Froome came in severely undercooked and won the giro in the 3rd. week. I dont think Froome can hold such a high level over time anymore, but TD proved he can, and maybe by delaying peak a little he can contest both.

Or he's just not in that great of a shape this year:p

Roglic is flying at the mo - if anyone can find a decent list of intermediate times we can confirm, but it looks like they're both c. 20 seconds ahead of the pack on a 2km climb. I've got better feelings about Yates maintaining that over 3 weeks than Roglic.

really, I thought that Yates is the guy thet burns out in third week

oh yes, the Vuelta; I kind of think he could pace himself a bit more against the great opposition he was facing in that race

Dumoulin's first reaction to MAL beating him on top of the climb today was "promising"

I kind of don't think like you. Opposition was good, and he was more than good.

The chances of somebody repeating what Froome did last year are remote IMHO. Especially if you don't have the team to do it.

Well, copying that ride will happen maybe once every 10 years.

But someone winning the race in a long range attack in the last week, is entirely possible the way the route is laid out this year.

Yates cracked last year in the toughest Giro in recent history. It was non stop from the gun on most stages. This Giro will be very different, not much real action until week 3.

Stages 13, 14 and 15 are a walk in the park.

I think you could lose a lot more time on a 2k/10% grade than 6k of flats, especially if it's a city course rather than a straight shot on secondary roads. Thus i think it favors pure climbers who can TT a bit, i.e. == Roglic and Yates. Dumoulin is no slouch and will probably carry 10 seconds advantage into the climb, but I don't think that will be enough.

That was an easy call! I think Dumoulin might be kicking himself for opting to start first. Nibali and Lopez surprised me a bit.

Honestly mostly just a shocking performance from Dumoulin.

Honestly this TT favors the climbers, but the issue here is that Dumoulin is an elite climber too and he laid a huge egg here

Not sure I get this reaction. Seemed to do about exactly what one would have expected. Near the top, and given the late demands of this race, entirely consistent with someone timing his peak in a couple weeks. I thought he was fine.
