I think it should go back to how it was. At least that is where I cast my vote.

If I have riders winning the stage or placing in the top 10 on the stage, I would be very sad to not get any green points because my one of my riders for GC lost a minute and is now projected for less at the end of the race. That I didnt pass any other players in the standings. If it is only quarenteed points, at least I would have been one of the players that scored the most points on the day and there for getting some shine and points in that competition. I think it is more fun following if I know I can at least win the daily ranking if my team and riders perform on a stage, especially if my team might not be doing so good or is projected to not do good.

OK, so change I have tried doesn't seem to have great support.

I'll continue it, because I have started and it does not seem right to abandon it halfway through a race.

But let's clarify what people are in favour of for other info I put up in this race and what I do for the Vuelta and future editions...

If we look at stage 10, the guaranteed points were:
van Aert Wout 80pts 1 team
Viviani Elia 50 no team
Ewan Caleb 35 16 teams
Matthews Michael 25 1 team
Alaphilippe Julian 20 (yellow jersey) no team
Sagan Peter 15 2 teams
Philipsen Jasper 10 no team
Colbrelli Sonny 5 2 teams
Trentin Matteo 3 1 team
Naesen Oliver 2 no team
Van Avermaet Greg 1 no team

and by team that is:
The Van Aert team 80
Combining Ewan and Matthews 60
2 teams with Ewan linked with Colbrelli 40
13 teams with Ewan alone 35
2 Sagan teams 15
A team with Matthews 3

What I had done prior to this year was simply to run the second classification as the total of these each day. As I say, that is susceptible to a lot of yellow jersey influence, even if it is not yet a feature in this edition. If this is what you want, it is already in my daily updates, as the guaranteed points top ten. On some days, a team, or several teams, might get well over a hundred; on another, with unfancied breakaway riders, there may be very low top score. It is very easy to post a daily top ten, or complete list, of this: it takes quite a bit of extra time to do the daily breakdown of which teams did well on account of which riders as I have in previous years.

If your preference is to apply the 80, 50, 35 to this daily ranking, then the yield would be:
The Van Aert team 80
Combining Ewan and Matthews 50
2 teams with Ewan linked with Colbrelli 30 each
13 teams with Ewan alone 2.77 each
2 Sagan teams and the team with Matthews nothing
This does run into the problem that Toby mentions about broad ties: there have been 2 stages this race which would have had 31 teams sharing joint 8th place. If you really want to see what it does, it is on the spreadsheet now as the 'Guaranteed Green' tab, the last one in the sheet, and the current standings would be:
1 LightBing 347.22
2 Koronin 233.86
3 BicycleBoy 188
3 Googolplex 188
5 TotalPackage 180.77
6 ArchieBoy 171.46
7 RattaKuningas 168.86
8 Otoxiep87 103.09
9 Ripley 101.88
10 JustSomeGuy 82.06
I could start posting this if there is real demand for it.

My thought is that for the green jersey competition the GC and yellow jersey shouldn't be part of the equation. A rider holding the actual green jersey in the race I could see having an influence, but not the yellow jersey or the polka dot jersey.

Obviously don't change it in the middle of the race.

Rest day 1 was yesterday, but I promised some numbers, so I'll do some quickly...(and then CN was not letting m open pages this morning, so it is even later...)

There are 23 riders who have won the points that come from 3rd on a stage or higher

So basically only one remotely popular pick is showing with any consistency here, Caleb Ewan. I have asterisked those who have a rare pick in this list if they also have Ewan.

If I were to rank each team's guaranteed points each day, and then apply the daily position points, we would have a lot of ties, and therefore a lot of decimals, and a table like this:

This is rather experimental, and might never be seen again: it is the last tab in the spreadsheet "Guaranteed Green".

Green points
Because this is based on the nett daily change of each team, it is meaningless to give rider scores. Discussion at CN suggests that there is a preference for returning to the guaranteed points. I will keep this going for this edition (it might be eventually considered an oddity like the 1906-12 tours decided by points rather than accumulated time), but we will have some kind of !vote after the tour, before the Vuelta to see what people prefer.
But, in the tradition of Mastermind, I have started so I'll finish, and in stage 10 we finally got every team onto the scoreboard.

Only 4 teams have suffered a DNF so far, three with Van Garderen and one with De Marchi.

To a large extent, it has been expensive riders getting big points: there are no very effective barcgains. The only riders (with >20 points) who are on course for a return of more than 25% are
ALAPHILIPPE Julian
THOMAS Geraint
BERNAL GOMEZ Egan Arley
KRUIJSWIJK Steven

The riders who are putting the top teams on the top

1 Ripley 1184 (Thomas, Bernal, Barguil, Kreuziger, Porte and 3 20s)
2 Josedin 1065 (Bernal, Buchmann, Mas, Kamna, Zabel, Rosskopf)
3 Otoxiep87 1053 (Bernal, Mas, Ewan, Porte, Aru, T Martin)

10 Armchair_Cyclist 946 (Bernal, Ewan, Uran, Kreuziger, Reichenbach, Zabel)
10 Googolplex 946 (Bernal, Sagan, Barguil, Henao, Zabel)

Despite his humble position in the table, Comodoro merits a mention for having all 8 of his riders doing more than the 20 point minimum.

Numbers galore

Stage 11 A fairly uneventful sprint stage.

Very little happening in GC apart from many people overtaking Ciccone, slight movement in the sprints classification, Soler sitting up, and the Zabel teams suffering the loss of a team member.

Standings

More change today than I would have expected, but the field is fairly evenly split between have-Ewans and have-nots. Otoxiep and Amis Velo rise from 3rd and 5th to take the lower steps on the virtual podium behind Ripley. Shalgo is the top of three new teams in the top ten, with Los Brolin and Rote Laterne just making it. Armchair Cyclist and Scrool both also make progress near the top, but the jump of the day is split 3 ways, with DJSprtsch and Koronin matching Shalgo's 8 place leap.

A couple of Pyrenees tomorrow: I suspect it will not change things as much as an MTF, but something will happen.

Hoping my sprinter points (and need more breakaways with my riders in them) to hold onto the green.

I'm in a bit of shock that my team is mid pack right now. I expect to drop in that as I have 1 GC rider in Mas. I thought Barguil was racing for the KOM, which is why I picked him.

Standings

Ripley already had a decent lead, and then he got the best player on the day as a unique pick. Surely the lead would only get bigger, I thought.

But no: Otoxiep87 had a very modest score today, but Ripley's triple whammy of Bernal, Barguil and Kreuziger allowed him to take the lead. Scrool is up from 6th to 3rd, and is followed by RattaKunungas, the highest placed of 4 new entries to the top ten (well done also to Kazistuta, Koronin and Carlo). But it is Squire who gets the shout out for the fastest climbing of the day, up by 14 places.

Maybe he has been dislodged today, but insofar as Thomas looks even more likely to prevail eventually, and he must be expected to start garnering 20 point daily bonuses before long, perhaps the balance has indeed swung in Ripley's direction.

Or maybe not...

How the heck did I get into the top 10 in the overall? My team is so not a GC team. Barguil is supposed to be going after the KOM. That was my entire reason for putting him on my team. More nice points from De Gendt. Did NOT expect that today.

Yesterday Thomas did well, and the team based on him dropped from the lead. Today he lost ground, and Ripley moves back to the top. Shalgo, Armchair and LosBrolin behind him each move up 3 places. Rote Laterne and DJSprtsch jump into the top ten, but they are both behind Search now, having been ahead of him this morning, due to Search's 15 place move.

Ripley retains the lead, but the three teams below are on the rise. Laarsland and Mellow Velo get into the top ten, but come nowhere near matching Triley's 12 place move.

Standings

Just as in the race itself, the leader has a fair margin, but there is a bunch of hopefuls closely bunched behind, waiting for weakness. No very big moves (6 teams share the jump of the day award by moving 3 places), but Ratta gets into second, and Total Package and Amis Velo move into the top ten.

If, as expected, tomorrow goes to the break, that is not the day that should see a lot of change, but I have a feeling there will be drama to come in the race, and the game, before it all finishes.

I had intended doing a "Who has lost riders" as part of the rest day update but forgot: by doing it today, I also get to muster sympathy for the three Kelderman teams

Only ArchieBoy has had the misfortune to lose 2 men: Van Aert and Van Garderen (cost 1632, gained 154)
BikeRacer33 and BlackBandit222 also lost Van Garderen (cost 567, gained 2)
Koronin suffered almost as much: De Marchi cost 562, no points
Carlo_Algatrensig, Triley36 and Vladimir are scarcely better off, with Kelderman (510, 6)
Escaping fairly lightly, so far, are the seven Zabel teams (Armchair Cyclist, Googolplex, Josedin, Laarsland, Mellow Velo, Tigerion, Total Package) who spent more modestly (104), and got a consolatory 3 points.

Stage 17 The Gap stage

Not much game interest in the break: one of the top ten was a unique pick, but at least that was the winner. Other than BlackBandit's unique pick, there were a few GC gains, and rather more losses, in the lower GC positions on account of 20 minute gifts.

Well that shook things up a bit. I didn't expect any new leader to emerge from as low as 10th, but that is what has happened with Amis Velo. Los Brolin's jump to second is slightly more modest, having come from 7th, while Scrool, Armchair and Rote Laterne also move up within the top ten, and Del1962 (who shares the top riser accolade with Bminchow) and DJSprtsch move into the ten.

Stage 19 Thunder, hail, floods, and quite possibly pestilence after l'Iseran

Although ASO have decided that they are not giving a stage result, CQ have published, and allocated points on the basis of, a finishing order. For some reason, while any other site I have seen have Uran 9th and Landa 10th, CQ have done it the other way around. This is a CQ game, so 2 points for Landa, 1 for Uran.
The 20 point yellow jersey bonus comes into play in the game for the first time this edition.

Incredibly close with 2 stages left. The top two stay where they were, but Rote Laterne moves up two places to the virtual podium, and cuts his deficit from 124 to 3. Fauniera is the only new entry to the top ten, but around him Shalgo, Search and DJSprtsch are all going the right way. But not as fast as Salvarani, who rose 7 places. The highest placed non-Bernal team fell 19 places.
