2019 Vuelta CQ Game

Page 2 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
One other bit of data that belonged pre-game, the Four Seasons Championship (Spring Classics + Giro + Tour + Vuelta)

There are 20 teams that have entered this, plus he three previous games, and so are in the running for that title.

But to be honest, there is only one team that is in the running to win it.
Scores after three of the four events:

Main Game

A reminder: because this is built on projected positions, riders can lose points. It doesn't mean they aren't doing well, just not as well as yesterday: Lopez is still the 3rd highest scoring selected rider, even though it looks like a disaster today. As is the case unless there are very few scorers, I only include those with the bigger shifts, and only those selected for the game.

Tomorrow, assuming it is for the sprinters, will not see anything like as much change.

Stage 3 The first sprint

If a sprinter dominates the stages that suit him in these games, then he can score as well in the game as anyone well into the GC top ten. But that is no more guaranteed than any GC man making the upper reaches of that table, so expensive big-name picks can be a high risk strategy. But for now, it looks like it might work for seven teams.

Overall

The top 7 are the 7 Bennett teams (he provides 112 points here). Yellow Knight, who surely had an eye on this category in choosing both Bennett and Gaviria, moves up 8 places to 2nd, But DJSprtsch is still the only one with two stage winners. Hakkie jumped from last to 12th with his unique pick being the winner today.

Main Game
Slightly more GC change than yesterday, but not in the upper reaches, so not with many points changing. But a hit for the Quintana teams in the points classification.
The three teams who were at the bottom of yesterday's table are the three teams who suffer the loss of Kruijswijk today. They did not lose many points from his standing this morning, but surely would have entertained hopes of his giving a bit more return on investment.

The top three all combine Lopez and Quintana (1st and 3rd on GC). The Lopez-Roglic team (1st and 2nd) only makes 9th, which I guess shows that stage placings and minor picks are not to be sneezed at.

I had almost put Jose Herrada on my team, and that would have been useful yesterday. However, another rider that was close to being on my team and left off was Hugh Carthy. With today's unfortunate crash and injuries, I'm glad I left him off the team.

Standings

The leader yesterday, and with one of the less disastrous performances today, Vladimir now has more than 200 points advantage. The three teams behind him maintain their positions, then we have DJSprtsch, who also lost far fewer points today than most teams, and so jumps into the top ten, with the biggest move forwards (10 places). Archie and Comodoro also make their way into the ten, but rather less dramatically.

Stage 7 A muro

Those who splashed out on the most expensive rider in the game will feel vindicated.

Red points

For the highest placed GC men, this is largely a return to where they were at the end of stage 5. No-one had picked either of today's DNFs. Quintana takes the Green jersey, which causes additional shake up, to the detriment of the teams with Sam Bennett.

Standings

For the most part, this was a compacting of the table rather than great change. But two managers make that not entirely the case: Kazistuta is up 4 places to 5th, and DJSprtsch has a 12 place leap into the top ten, mainly by virtue of having neither Lopez nor Roglic.

Rest day tomorrow: I hope to have time for some numbers.

Thanks for all the updates. I am sure they are really appreciated even though there are few responses. Don't know if there is a realistivc chance that some of the Roglic teams will take over the lead tomorrow, but I will off course watch this space eagarly for the daily updates!

I think it is possible if Roglic gets the stage, GC lead and red jersey bonus. Those who picked him couldn't afford so many mid priced riders, but the most popular such picks- Aru, Chaves, did badly yesterday so the Roglic teams climbed the rankings

Rest Day 1
Green points
which, after a rule change arising from discussion during the Tour, now consists only of stage points, not red jersey bonuses. Those with a stage podium, or equivalent

Major changes: Vladimir concedes his top spot to Rote Laterne, looking for a Vuelta-Tour double and up from 5th. Del1962 also has a 4 place jump to the podium, and there are ni less than 5 new entries to the top ten (LosBrolin, BicycleBoy, Shalgo, Googolplex and AmisVelo) The biggest jump is outside the ten though: Bminchow has gone up 13 spots.

Thanks for all the updates. I am sure they are really appreciated even though there are few responses. Don't know if there is a realistivc chance that some of the Roglic teams will take over the lead tomorrow, but I will off course watch this space eagarly for the daily updates!
I think you should hang on tomorrow, although the podium behind you might be different.
But the spreadsheet is available each day here to do any "What if?"s you might want.
