2020-22 Emerging Riders CQ Game

Who will win the Tour de France and the Giro in 2022? If you know, and they have each had a less illustrious career thus far than Dylan Sutherland (who has 200 CQ points thus far in his career), you'll do OK in this. Bernal and Carapaz have done the equivalent this year, but did you reckon them as prospects 3 years ago?

The Emerging Riders game tests your powers of prediction of the brightest talents, or most misleading early deceivers, in the sport, over a three year period.

Your Team is to consist of 18 male riders, each of whom has a maximum of 199 CQ points through their career, (so long as that total is not kept low because of results removed under doping sanctions)

There is a long list on Dropbox of people who have appeared in CQ listings in the last three years but without reaching 200 points: you may of course want to select riders who have never appeared. That file also has a more manageable list of about 180 names: Riders who have been selected for either the main annual CQ game or the Youth CQ game, but are eligible for this one. Consider it a longish-shortlist that you might, or might not, choose to use.

Submit your team by PM to me, before the beginning of the Tour Down Under on January 21. As usual, names in CQ format please, with nothing else on the line. If the rider has no CQ page, then hope that SURNAME Forename is what CQ will go with (and if not I'll hopefully be able to track him down eventually).

My team has been sent to Joelsim, the manager of the first team submitted. I reserve the right to adjust it in the case of a rider emerging Gaviria-like before the deadline (although with the earlier deadline that should be less likely).

The score is CQ points gained over the next three years (the less-than-200 points before the game don't count) , the end of 2022 update being the end. I might need to be alerted to points from one year that are deleted the next. I aim to give updates monthly, but bear with me, especially when the GT games are on.

Entries up to late on Sunday 19th Jan.

Equipo enviado Ser el primero en enviarlo ya está ganando algo. ¡Venga! :).
Estas son algunas de las características de mi equipo:
  • EQUIPOS: 10 PRT + 1 CONT
  • EDADES: 19 años (1), 20 (1), 21 (3), 22 (8), 23 (4), 24 (1)
  • PAÍSES: Italia (5), Alemania (2), Bélgica (2), Países Bajos (2), EE. UU. (2), Colombia (2), Dinamarca (1), España (1), Luxemburgo (1)
I can cope with brief messages in Spanish, but other managers, please do not follow Jon's example of having names translated into Spanish (or any other language). We have all had a laugh with Mikel Snow, Sandy Marry and David Stream (for señores Nieve, Casar and Arroyo), but it is a nuisance when compiling spreadsheets to have to translate.

With apologies for giving away one of his team members (although I'm sure it is a rider all will at least consider), Ilan Van Más Salvaje is a step too far.

Sorry. It's CHROME that changes my messages. I never know in what language they will reach your hands. I always send them in normal English, but the CHROME browser automatically translates messages as he wants to the language he wants. I have never translated the names or surnames of cyclists; I always put them as in CQ RANKING. I'm sorry, but I don't know how to fix this problem.

I have finally got the Dropbox spreadsheet up, with the names of about 3 and a half thousand riders who have scored CQ points at least once in the last three years, but have not yet reached the 200 lifetime points that would disqualify them. I have added to the list any eligible riders at WT and PT level. You may, of course, choose others who haven't scored in the last three years and are currently below this level.

The Dropbox file also contains a list of riders who you might have been thinking of, but who have gained their disqualifying 200th point during 2019.

The list can be found here.

Seems like there's been an inflation in CQ points over the last couple of years, especially for the young riders. In my team for the 2017 edition of this game, I could fit almost all the biggest U23 talents that were turning pro into my team: Mas, Gaudu, Albanese, Powless, Grøndahl Jansen, Ravasi and, if I'd had any sense, Schachmann. Guys like Kämna, Ganna and Frankiny were eligible too. It was really just Geoghegan Hart and Ackermann that had scored too much already.

Now a lot of the most exciting neo-pros have scored way too many points before they go pro, like Dainese, Foss, Hayter, Valter, Leknessund, Pronskiy, Champoussin, Battistella, Groves and also Almeida and Bjerg (who are not technically neo-pros).

A week from now (the datestamp on this post) it will be a just over 10 1/2 hours since the start of the Tour Down Under.

That means that you have 6 days, 13 and a bit hours to get your teams in. The dropbox linked in the OP now includes the riders who are eligible for this and have been thought worthy pf a place in at least one manager's opinion of a place in the Main CQ game, or the Youth game. Not always a great recommendation, it should be said, and those games have other criteria for selection, but it might give you some ideas.

Just recovered my account in this forum :)

I don't see an inflation. Cq ranking criteria and UCI calendar are almost the same. The issue is just the different particularities of every young rider career, and their calendar choices.

Less than 2 days to go: you'll have three years to regret it if you don't...

25 teams so far, using 129 different riders, 62 of them unique picks. One rider is on 20 teams, and there are 11 on more than half the teams: 2 managers have selected all 11 of them, and one has none of them.

I will likely have the 11 riders on more than half the teams... after the main game is up and running, sometimes I really enjoy digging into the hunt for unknown riders for this game, and sometimes I just take some decent prospects off my longlist for the main game and call it a day. That latter approach is this year - I've slotted in 15 from my main game long list and have 5 more I'm mulling over for the last 3 spots. I'll see if I can turn up some undiscovered (to me) gems in the last 24 hours but I probably won't shock anyone with my picks (unlike the main game where I'm known for my originality, of course). Excited to start another year!

Your three year journey starts here.

32 teams: a few regulars like DJW, Hakkie, Flo and Fauniera are missing, but nice to welcome some new faces.

136 different riders selected, 62 of them only once.

Here are those teams, asterisks, as ever, indicating unique picks.

That bunch of 18 make up the Collective Wisdom team. Viviani was on only 2 or 3 teams before he won the first stage of Tropicale Amissa Bongo about 11 hours before the deadline, then featured on most of the late submissions and was swapped in by three managers. Gaviria's sudden emergence during San Luis in 2015 made a big difference in that edition of the game, but I am not convinced that beating Lorrenzo Manzin once is equivalent as a harbinger to beating Cavendish twice back then.

Despite Alex Peters being a very under-performing member of the Collective Wisdom team in the 2016-18 game, and scoring a grand total of zero across three years in the following edition, Lukas still has confidence in him.

I had expected to see far more picks for Marco Brenner, with people assuming that he would do enough in years 2 and 3 to make up for what might be an insignificant score in year 1. Did people not realise how good a pick Evenepoel was in the 2017-19 game, despite only scoring in year 3, (or Bernal in 2015-17, when he was in the best possible team) or is the hype considered overblown?

Thanks for the roundup! I was quite surprised to find that I have picked the 5 most popular riders this time around. Felt that there was no absolute "must have" picks, so thought I had forgotten someone. Most surprising for me is probably that no one has picked Vacek. He was last man outside my team, and was on 9 teams last year. My uniqie picks were quite expected. Highest hopes for the new Vino/Lutsenko - Yevgeniy Fedorov.
Good luck to all, and thanks again for organizing Armchair!

@Squire Our teams are quite alike. 13 of our 18 riders are the same, if I'm not mistaken.

My team:

BARTHE Cyril
GARRISON Ian
HONORE Mikkel Frolich
MOLENAAR Alex
VERMAERKE Kevin

Your team:

CEPEDA ORTIZ Jefferson Alexander
RUBIO REYES Einer Augusto
RUTSCH Jonas
THIJSSEN Gerben
VERMEERSCH Florian

I have picked riders of Deceuninck (GARRISON, HONORE, probably VERMAERKE in 2021), a high scoring MOLENAAR that transfered to a PCT team that might go to the Vuelta and BARTHE who progressed well in 2019 and can maybe develop faster since he's a sprinter. We'll see.

For the record: I also considered CEPEDA (because Savio), RUBIO (nice result in Baby Giro and transfer to Movistar) and RUTSCH (a win in Ghent-Wevelgem is something to take into account).

First try in these CyclingNews games, so I might lack some insights in game tactics.

Game on!

I have done a Team Similarity tab, and the 13 shared members that Fivezzz and Squire have, identified above, is the highest co-incidence of teams, but not a unique degree of similarity.

Also sharing 13 riders:
Laarsland and Los Brolin,
Laarsland and Madrazo,
Laarsland and Northerner,
Los Brolin and Madrazo,
Los Brolin and Skidmark,
Madrazo and Northerner,
Madrazo and Skidmark

Obviously enough, it is the teams at the top of the rider popularity table who have most in common. Madrazo has 17 of the Collective Wisdom team, missing only Jonas Rutsch.

I guess what makes it stand out is that none of us are at the absolute top of team popularity.

I guess my picks are a bit more romantic, while yours are more low risk/low reward. I don't believe that Honoré will be much more than a very solid domestique, but even that role can of course get you points when on Quickstep. Will be interesting to follow Garrison. I heavily considered him.

I'm especially excited about Rutsch. He looked like a beast in Alsace and in Avenir until he crashed out. Incredible uphill for such a big guy. Serious classics potential there.

Strongly considered Brenner. But picking him would mean having to endure a year of no points at all, and there's no guarantee he'll not stagnate, burn out or otherwise not be a success. And who knows, he might discover booze and girls in the meantime. :D

Bernal had the added benefit of a very points-friendly calendar for two years, and even he didn't set the world on fire in his first year. Evenepoel has created unrealistic expectations for riders coming straight out of juniors. Even such an obvious talent as Brenner could end up doing a Mohoric.

I'm surprised I managed to pick the two most popular riders. Also surprised I only have 5 unique picks, but that means at least this time most of the riders others at least think are also good enough to pick. So that's hopeful. Yes I decided that I'd go with several Movistar rookies, because with the huge turnover a couple of these kids have to get some chances to do something. One of my unique picks (Ballesteros) has raced as an amateur for both Contador's and Valverde's developmental teams. He's with Caja Rural's development team for this season.

Year 1, Month 1 Up to 2nd February

The first update is probably of little significance to the final scores, but offers an early slice of pride, and gives me a few mouth in heart moments as I see whether the spreadsheet does what it should.

Top ten scorers who were selected:
HOLMES Matthew 65 points, mainlyfor finally dethroning Porte on Wilunga Hill, for Del1962, hfgon1 and Lukas CPH
HAILU Biniam Girmay 45 (two stage wins and a third in Tropicale Amissa Bongo) for 6 teams
VIVIANI Attilio 34 (stage and some other points in Amissa Bongo) 10
OLDANI Stefano 32 (5th in Trofeo Playa de Palma) 5
BUITRAGO SANCHEZ Santiago 23 (19th on GC in TDU); Josedin, Otoxiep87
RIVERA VARGAS Brandon Smith 20 (4th in Colombian TT nat's); hfgon1, Josedin
VANHOUCKE Harm 18 pts 1 teams
DINA Marton 16 1
DRIZNERS Jarrad 16 1
PEÑALVER ANIORTE Manuel 16 2

but TESFATSION Natnael Ocbit and LEVASSEUR Jordan both scored over 100 this month, and FLOREZ LOPEZ Miguel Eduardo, MORIN Emmanuel, MULUBRHAN Henok and PAREDES AVELLANEDA Cesar Nicolas got 50 or more. They might be serious misses, or they might never reach these heights again, but history tells us that most of us will have some members of our teams who will score fewer points in the three years than these guys have this month.

Standings
Everyone is off the mark (mainly through popular picks Viviani, Rutsch and Cepeda), and our first leader is a newcomer to these games.

1 hfgon1 150 ( mainly from Holmes, Hailu and Rivera)

CollectiveWisdom 54
CollectiveIgnorance* 839

* For those new to the updates, or who never quite got their heads around it: the Collective Ignorance team is the 18 highest scoring riders that none of us picked. Unlike the other teams, this team changes its make-up as the game progresses, and so is always exceptionally good early on in the game. It drops back into the same range of scores as most of us by around the middle of year two, but it serves to draw our attention, and our embarrassment, to those we omitted.

Updates should be roughly monthly, but don't be surprised if there are longer gaps when a GT game is in progress.

Don't gloat or despair on the basis of this, this is no more than looking for a position at the beginning of a long ride.
