2021-23 Emerging Riders CQ Game

Page 2 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
We are up to 30 teams now: it would still be good to have a last minute rush. I think/hope I have acknowledged receipt of all teams: if you sent me a team and I haven't replied, let me know.

I said end of January as a deadline, without being precise about which timezone. I believe the legal principle is that where there is ambiguity, the more generous interpretation is to be applied, so I guess that is midnight tonight in Hawaii or somewhere (Do we have any contributors in Samoa?).

So in effect you have until I get a chance to attend to it mid-morning UK time on Monday.

Just submitted - oh boy it was a tough one this year. Double whammy of not following the ins and outs of youth development as much in the last year, as well as not having that many races for developing riders to assess their strength relative to each other. Well, plus what was said above about their scores being depressed and more riders being eligible. Triple whammy!

I suspect one of the Alaska time zones is the most generous. No idea if we have anyone in Somoa, Hawaii or Alaska. We definitely have people on the west coast. :)

So here we go

OK, I think all inhabited zones of the planet have now reached the end of January.

36 teams in, which is about the level of participation this game has usually had. Great to welcome some new managers: always a pity to see some of the regulars not submit a team, but hopefully we will see them again.

There was only one ineligible rider nominated, and that was my fault (I had missed CQ's change if Debesay's forename from Yacob to Yakob, and so had omitted his 2018 points from my cumulative total, and erroneously listed him as eligible: thanks to the manager involved for amending his team quickly and with good grace): a couple of strange autotranslations, and a few misspellings and missing second surnames, but they were easily sorted. The two managers who imposed unnecessary restrictions on their selections both submitted more competitive second squads.

On those 36 teams we have 120 different riders: they can't all become superstars by the end of 2023, but hopefully some of them will have some impressive results over the three years.

Rider popularity
A three way tie for the most popular rider (I don't think we have seen that before): Brenner had an early lead, Arensman caught up and the lead changed quite a bit as teams came in: Kooij was on enough late teams that omitted one or both of those to catch up very late in the process.

28 of 36 teams: ARENSMAN Thymen, BRENNER Marco, KOOIJ Olav
24: DEKKER David, VAN WILDER Ilan
22: VANSEVENANT Mauri
21: ALEOTTI Giovanni
20: TEJADA CANACUE Harold Alfonso

15: DONOVAN Mark
14: AYUSO PESQUERA Juan, TIBERI Antonio, VERMAERKE Kevin
13: ARDILA ORDOÑEZ Andres Camilo, RODRIGUEZ CANO Carlos

And the 18 riders on a dozen or more teams comprise to Collective Wisdom team
11: COLLEONI Kevin, SHEFFIELD Magnus, WALLS Matthew
10: BRUNEL Alexys, HÄNNINEN Jaakko, MILAN Jonathan, VANDENABEELE Henri, VERVLOESEM Xandres

And there should be 47 asterisked unique picks in the list above this one.

I think the Vaceks are only the second pair of brothers to be in an edition of the game: I doubt they will score as well as the Yates, but I hope they are not total failures as I have one of them. We also have younger siblings of the Viviani, Paret-Peintre and Garrison families represented.

All of Lucas Plapp's selections came after his Wilunga Hill exploits, though he got no points for that as it was a national series level race. Although a few other points have been gained before entries closed (I will hope to do the first points posting this evening, household duties permitting), I didn't notice them creating any surge in naming anyone.

Bminchow (who virtually swept the board in CQ games in 2020) complained that he had no idea how to go about picking a team for this one (his first time here), and then sent in a team that tops the popularity table.

Other than the Collective Wisdom team described above, there is as previously a Collective Ignorance team, which will constantly change its make-up through the game as the best 18 riders that we could have had but all overlooked: expect that team to be far and away the best team early on, and finally to finish around mid-table.
You will notice another non-manager picked team: I have pooled together the riders eligible for this who were most frequently chosen in the 2021 season CQ game just to see how they do. All of them are fairly popular in this game, but 4 of them did not make the Collective Wisdom team. It would reflect well on those in the main game if this group scores very well in year 1, and well on those in this game if it then drops a bit in the table, at least below Collective Wisdom, thereafter.

I need to go out now: will probably come up with a few more numbers later.

Go on, be quick, and make a pinky swear that you were not influenced by what you have seen here this afternoon.

And promise not to win;)
I really appreciate the leniency!

I can't promise not to top the popularity table though. I'm actually quite close to the collective wisdom team, I think (do have a unique pick though). But if anyone wants proof that I don't cheat, I do have my team in an excel sheet which hasn't been modified since 8th of January (file properties). No problem making a quick screen capture video of me opening it, should someone wish it.

Anyway, if you chuck these guys into the game, I'll be happy!

Was planning to sub in Ardila for someone (probably for Donovan), but I won't push my luck, and will stick with the team in the excel sheet! :D

I don't understand how Olav KOOIJ escaped me. I did not have it among the eligible, when in the last list I had included 41 names. Bad start, which makes it very difficult for me to achieve the fourth place that I got last year with the 2020-22 team .

Thanks for all your work, armchair! Seems like my team is second on the popularity ranking, which honestly isn't that surprising to me (I think I'm usually at the top also). I wanted to make room for Donovan and Ayuso as well, but couldn't quite do that. Ayuso was in my team for a long time, but in the end I dropped him as I think it might be a year too early to pick him (one year at Colpak and at least one year to settle on the WT for UAE). I think for sure he's a bigger talent than some riders on my team, though.

Good luck to everyone!

Squire makes a late entry at 4th in the popularity table, and puts Amis Velo above Hakkie for 2nd. His selection doesn't change the Collective Wisdom squad, or the three way tie at the top, but does remove Asbjorn Hellemose from eligibility for the Collective Ignorance team.

Very difficult choises this year with so many cheap neoproriders from last year that normally would have been too expensive now after a normal season, and then also a lot of jokers comming from other sports all very tempting to pick but all also very risky like Zwiehoff, Palzer, Romo and Vigo where I ended up only going for Vigo, despite his injury, as he seemed the most hyped with most chances to ride for himself, and since his team sounded like they had expected a topresult from him in his first race if not for the injury. Then some extremely talented 18 year old riders like Umba and Ayusu that normally are too young, but with so great talents that I did not dare not to selct them. Ayusos junior results last year were just brutal and almost reminds me of Valverdes spanish juniordominance and Umbas debut was just so impressive besides the usual next-Bernal hype so he had to get a spot too, and also since he should be allowed to ride a lot for himself on his team.

In the end I also made a change just before the deadline after GP Marsaillaise where Simon Carr was so impressive he had to get a spot. In the end he got Carlos Rodriguez spot despite his great talent, since both him also focussing a lot on his education and him riding for Ineos where it will be some years until he should get to lead anything should be too much of a handicap to become a must. It could also have been Ardilas spot, after his hirrible 2000 season, but I did not dare drop him.

My rarest pick was also one of my last picks with Weemaes, and he was momentaraly also the guy I dropped for Carr after his OTL in GP Marsaillaise, but in the end he got his spot afterall, as I expect him to be Topsports new nr 1 sprinter the next years and since he sounded like the team believed a lot in him for the comming years and also since he in his first years have been handicapped also by injury and a now stopped trackfocus. And with the other sprinters gone from Topsport and new sprinters like Arne Marit stating he was begind him in the hierarchi I feel optimistisc about a lot of easy points for him despite maybe picking him over some more talented riders.

The solid obvious pick Jorgenson was my next reserve, but did not exite me enough, and I was also very tempted by the 2 belgians climbers Vandenabeele and Vervloesem but with many belgian climbers often a bit slow to develop I figured they were too young.

That last column is the hint that I have set up a team similarity tab. Other than Bminchow's 15 man overlap with the Collective Wisdom team, the highest correlations are:

14 riders in common: Cordi-Ludwigzgz
13: Amis Velo-Squire
Bminchow-Squire
Jon Ezietza-Nyssinator
Madrazo-Squire
Nakazar-Northern
and the 5 teams noted above who share 13 of the Collective Wisdom list.

Pre-game points
Each rider is allowed 199 points and still be permitted in the game, so in theory a team could legitimately have 3582 points. These numbers mean very little, but maybe show the propensity of a manager to go for riders who have already shown themselves in the pro ranks a bit, or conversely, whether they are willing to invest in riders who might only come through in years 2 and 3.

This is probably just jostling for a place in the breakaway on stage one of a GT: it will be a while before we see who the main challengers will be.

This really shows how my attention has dropped off a bit lately. Had I checked the results (and age) of Umba, he would have been in my team. Barely 18 and 4th in Tachira! And strong results in Europe as a 1st year junior. When I'm not paying attention, I think I'm blind to the Savio hype. Vigo, on the other hand, seems a bit too much of a wildcard for me. Though I have to admit I hardly researched him at all. I'm getting lazy.

I did at least notice Ayuso's crazy season!

I didn't take anyone of this 4 as I think they have a lot to prove still... But the one with wich I'm most hyped is clearly Romo, astounding talent that has already show himself in 2020 at Spanish amateur races. He gave a sensation of dominance for an absolute newcomer that was very ramarkable, in his first ever race already in the front and helping his teammate win, in his second race winning the u23 nationals in big fashion with a long solo, after that he was already one of the most followed wheels of the circuit. . He also was previously a big talent in triatlon.

But you know, anyway he's arriving at WT after only a couple of months cycling. His ceiling is very high, but how he'll adapt to WT? What role will he get in his first seasons? Seems to me like potentially a great allrounder, but maybe not an specialist...

.
About Carr, I didn't see him last sunday, but I've been following him closely since his great performances in Spain in 2019. His win in Bidasoa and Navarra, showing big climbing legs, caught my interest. He later would win Valencia, top10 Savoie, great impression as a stagiere in Norway... Still didn't choose him for 2020 as there's only 18 places, but after this year Volta a Portugal, he was a must.

At the most crucial point in GP Marsaillaise he was the only one able to follow Tim Wellens' attack, and then he also attacked again later on after they got caught so it was very impressive and for me it was needed to get picked even after a solid Tour Portugal.

In my research before that I had also noticed the good results in the spanish amateurstageraces you mention, so all in all he looks very promessing and a background in a french amateur team also worked very well for Adam Yates for instance.

Yes Romo sounds very interesting also but as you mention is a big risk. I do also think the teamroles were mostly what held me back on him and also Zwiehoff and Palzer (where they spoke a lot about them becomming mountaindomenstics) compared to Vigo that should get more chances for himself early on if he is as good as hoped.

Ayusos season was crazy indeed, almost more dominant in Spain than Evenepol was in the international juniorscene. But good thing you did not get to finish all your research so our teams did not get even more similar. Its almost every time our teams are the most similar it seems so we must think a lot alike. I like that you picked Weemaes too, so I feel better about that rare pick !

Vigo was a wild card indeed, but I think I just also felt I had to go for one total wildcard, where the 4 guys from other sports were the options, and he was the guy where the hype got me the most even though the Savio-hype might be fading generally. He might become a flop but for sure he will get his chances if he is good unlike someone like Carlos Rodriquez for instance and that would perhaps be more frustrating. I was also very tempted by your pick Zwiehoff though especially after him beating Roglic in that recent E-sport-matchup :) He will for sure also be interesting to follow.

So between us it's gonna be about:

ARDILA ORDOÑEZ Andres Camilo
BRUNEL Alexys
CARR Simon
UMBA LOPEZ Abner Santiago
VIGO DEL ARCO Marti

vs.

HELLEMOSE Asbjørn
ZWIEHOFF Ben
RUBIO REYES Einer Augusto
WALLS Matthew
BERWICK Sebastian

Must say I'm not too confident there. Ardila and Umba would both probably have been in my team if I had not forgotten about this game for a couple of weeks. Brunel was in my team at some point, but then I watched a video of his Besseges win, and it was from a (admittedly impressive) solo attack, so it became less of a predictor of a good future in my eyes. He's actually been on my radar since he was a junior, but he hasn't really followed up as an U23 and a pro.

The only one I'm really happy that you don't have is Rubio. I think he is quite underrated.
