I think the point is that they got something out of the race aka won a stage before abandoning.

Ah fair enough. I saw the "fruitful" as it being criticizing riders for leaving after they done something. I'm pretty certain Mader and Dombrowski would have gone for the mountain jersey and still be here if it wasn't for their crashes.

Not sure if he's still a full-time time trialist though ;)
Yeah true, although he was second in the final TT last year, so maybe he could have performed if it wasn't for his injury. He can climb fairly well so if he'd take it easy in the last few stages he might cause an upset like Chad Haga did a couple years back, certainly considering Ganna will have to work hard. Clearly not this year though xD

Breakaway wouldn't make it. They are not allowed to get much more than 5 minutes. And there are two brutal mountains coming up.

I've found commentless and commercialess stream.
I'm close to the finish. Sega di Ala is a very tough climb, first km has already a section at 20%. Hot day, might be too hot for some riders coming from the rest day and the terrible weather before.
Brought a banner, a flag or you're gonna moon?

the break can still make it, i dont think bike exchange is strong enough.
They 3.5 riders for the flat and 3.5 riders for the climb, I think they can do a pretty decent job tbh. The gap is in fact coming down a bit at the moment. Besides, they don't necessarily have to do the job all by themselves, I expect EF to push it on the climbs, maybe Astana as well and Ineos will want to keep a tempo once the climbs arrive too.
